Our students union at college seems to do nothing at all but arrange parties (literally nothing else). It turns out that the latest 'party' they had actually made them the first profit ever! and guess what they did with it?

A). use it to enhance college life by providing another chess board (cost: €10)

B). used it to upgrade desperately outdated computers

C). spent the entire lot on 10-20 students in accomadation course' trip to france, ignoring the 240 some other students

take a wild guess which one they chose, in thier almighty wisdom.

Anyone else got stories of useless student unions that do more harm than good?

as far as i have been able to tell all the student union at Leeds does is organise big partys....well thats all i know of anyway. And i have no idea what that money is spent on. None at all.....

But that NUS card they give you is very handy. Discount almost everywhere you go. Larger clubs and pubs and bars give you cheaper drinks, discount at cinemas, infact discount almost everywhere i have been

Don't give a dam about the parties but i'm happy with my discounts :D

Just thank your lucky stars that you actually have student unions. Ours is getting knocked down because it "Blocks the view of the new IT building". T'isn't getting rebuilt either. :sigh:

our unoin's club is the one that baffles me, i mean sure it looks like a club, its just it cost some insaine thing to do. Its crap. takes 30 mins to get served, the floor is one of those thats designed to be sticky.

But worse than that, the drinks are soo exepensive, often more than twice what you would pay in town on the same night! (and town's better). Apparently they are having to charge so much because of the unoin's debt they spent doing up the club (360).

So yes, people often say that anyone with enough time to be on the unoin aren't exactly respective of the uni student body anyway.

The SU where I work seem pretty good and have a fair amount of say in the Uni. The people I have dealt with seem to take an interest in other students, there was an issue dragging on but when the SU got involved the problem was addressed fairly quickly. When I was an Uni I didn't even know where my SU was.

our student union bar is great because its cheap and somewhere to sit, relax and chat but as for the actual students union the only thing i seem to know they organise is our Christmas ball which for the past few years has been disappointing. They send out surveys asking us what we would like and our suggestions but very rarely take them into account. The only events i do enjoy are the "drink the bar dry" events as they are well organised and great fun.

The student magazine is very good and they do seem to sort out any major issues affecting us students

ROFLMAO, you in 360, thats such a damn funny thought :)

Not just is Reading Unis club stupid, the union itself is organised like an ant hill build around a block of c4 would be after the c4 has been detonated.

Its been an absolute mission to get a reply from the VP of clubs and societies (I am president of a soc at uni). In fact she hasnt yet replied to me, I had to email over her head with my complaints and i've finally received a reply. Shes too busy writing about the ****ing union gerbils or whatever those little fury things are. BAH!

Oh well, we are just trying to do everything without involving them at all.
