You'll find that you're better at working, the closer it is to the deadline. :)

At the moment, I've got loads of work to do, but its ages until the deadline. You have to have some self-control, but it does help to seperate, in your mind, where you work and where you play. I work on my old laptop, I play on my PC and my Wii.

I do procrastinate a little bit, but it's much better than it might otherwise be.

If studying was easy there would be no job competition

I find it's a challenge to get started more than actually studying.

What I used to do is take my power cable away and sit on it for a bit to stop me using the PC. When I did need to PC to work then i'd create a brand new account on the Pc which was denied internet access and had no files on except for Office. No MP3s, no nothing.

Then I got a DS lite though, so nothing really helped.

I exercised what is commonly known as self-control.

Yeah the fix is Self-Control. This will need alot of hard work and challenges. I don't know but yes, nothing easy in the life :) I will try this.

    Thanks very much.

Perhaps you should try studying instead of looking on the internet for ways to study.

    I'm with Moriquendi on this:
Having said that, concentration is a balancing act of the brain. You often find that you can concentrate better on studying/reading (mainly a left-hemisphere activity) when you give the right hemisphere the brain something to do to prevent it from distracting you from that process (for the record, this left hemi and right hemi model is an oversimplification, but it will do for now).

The right hemisphere task needs to be relatively undemanding and does not distract the left hemisphere. Basically, put on some music. Not loud, and not your favorite stuff; just some neutral background music. Classical works well.

Make a time table of study times and what subjects you study. Switch off the mobile, make sure you don't get interrupted. Make sure you are comfortable.

Study for 30 minutes. After that, your concentration slacks. Take a ten minute break: have a cup of tea, ponder what you've just read. Write down what you learned in the last 30 minutes in one sentence. Allow your working memory to store the information --it will take that 10 minutes to do that. Use a timer to time the work and break periods.

Make a mind-map to integrate what you know on a subject:
    - take a big piece of paper. Write the subject in the middle.
    - Write all you know about the subject around it, in short titles/headings.
    - Draw lines between the titles/headings that are associated with each other. Now your mind gets an overview on how to organise the information you are learning, and you also spot what you need to learn more about.

Pace yourself- study no more than 6 hours a day if possible. Get some physical exercise in, because that improves energy. Eat and sleep well --sleep is when your memory sorts out all the information you have learned that day: if you don't sleep well, you won't retain well. Set yourself a reward at the end of the day.

And don't buy a Nintendo DS. Or Bioshock. :p

I've always felt music distracts me, and I do listen to classical.
What I do is try and get rid of all sound distractions, make myselfa cup of tea and then just get stuck into an exam paper. My concentration never wavers until I'm finished.

Only one other tip, get up early, do a period of studying in the morning then take a break for an hour or two, eat lunch outside or go for a walk then get back at it for the afternoon and do the same at tea time. If you let yourself sleep all morning you will still feel tired in the afternoon and wont be able to concentrate, getting outside really helps with this too, it helps you feel refreshed.

When I'm working at school, I just turn off my screen and speakers and just concentrate on what I'm doing. Just make sure you don't do too much at a time. 50 mins of work and then a 10 min break seems to work perfectally for me.

Honestly, for me it's just a matter of practice and self-control. When deadlines are approaching, I'm much better at it. That recent blog post that someone linked to (cthippo perhaps? I'm too lazy to check the first page) is a good resource. Setting a goal is a major step - know what you want to get out of it. When I had to study for a stats exam, I knew we were allowed to bring in a formula sheet with us. So my goal was to make a very readable and useful formula sheet. Once I knew what I wanted and knew when I needed to have it done by (the next day, of course), it was fairly easy - I had to just sit down and pound it out, and tell myself that I wouldn't do anything but that until I was finished. And I did. It was a fairly painful process and I certainly had to take a couple short breaks during the time, but it made the difference between passing with a fairly decent grade and failing miserably.

Having someone hide your power cord won't help, because if it's not the computer then you'll just find something else to distract yourself with.

Uh, yeah Daddy Nexxo, you should really consider a career where you use your insight into how people work to help them. I bet you'd be good at it. :D Maybe you could take a few classes on how the brain works and work that into the mix, too. Then you can feel more people and their minds! Nexxo the Mind Feeler. I has a ring to it.

CK, your posts liven my day in the strangest ways and I thank you for it.
