So, I have an older laptop (compaq) and it has been a great laptop for a good number of years. I had a few problems a few weeks ago, random shut downs, BSOD's ect. So I ran memtest and sure enough one of the sticks of ram was bad (it had a 512mb and a 256, the 512mb was bad). So I just pulled the 512 and was running on the 256, problem solved. Or so I thought. Just tonite, I was using it and it just shut off, without battery attached. And power button wouldnt restart it, so pulled the cord and voila, it starts up like I pushed the button. Weird eh?

So now, after all the ideas I have tried, it is still unpredicable. And annoying me like nuts as it seems like a total random issue now.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks guys! :)

Have you tried disconnecting the secondary battery as well as the main battery and leaving it for a while?

Also, what model number is it?

You mean the button cell battery that keeps the clock accruate? I havnt seen a area for that on this laptop, unless its internalized. And I will have to try that with the leaving the main off for awile.

I did set the power options in the power management area to 'always on' (like what the computer does if the cover is closed etc.) And didnt do anything weird since then (but still an unknown).

    Its also the Presario 3077WM

    Thanks!

    :)

    Grab the service manual:
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01153631.pdf

Page 116 (5-38, or section 5.17,) remove the main battery and the RTC battery and see if essentially clearing the CMOS does anything. Also, while you're in there, make sure all connections are re-seated and are locked properly.

Well, what do you know! It does have a goofy cell battery in there... and buried to boot!

Will have to try that out. Thanks Silver51! :)
