I've had this particular Linux machine running for nearly a year and suddenly the xserver stops loading. Everything works fine except I can't get back to my pretty GUI. I've reconfigured XF86Config-4 repeatedly both by hand and with xf86config, xf86config --expert, and XFdrake. Nothing has worked. Monitor refresh rates are correct, and I've tried several of the ATI drivers. Also there is nothing in the .xsession-errors log. After login at prompt, type 'startx', screen goes to different shades of grey/blue and then turns off. I've left it alone for over an hour and x never does start. This is Mandrake 8.2 on my PII 300Mhz ATI Radeon 7500 old Hyundai HN-4848 monitor Any ideas?
Okay, that's really weird. Also, never use those config utilities, always do it by hand, as I find most of thsoe XFConfig programs just **** it up more. Are you shue your screens are detecting and set up properly ? It has resolutions set up to use right ? Your using the right modules for the driver right ? Maybe your isntall of X jsut went belly up. Maybe you got a weird virus, or just a bad error that fubared the entire thing. If you can't get anything else out of the config file, I'd try to instlal new version of X. Or at least update X, maybe it's jsut a bit too old for soemthing of yours ? From your post it sounds liek you know a fair bit about Linux and what your doing, so why do you have Mandrake installed
I'm using Mandrake cause that's what I have and like it. It has resolutions set up but I didn't verify that they were correct for my monitor. I will do that. I tried to get the latest build, but Xinstall.sh -create told me something of mine was not supported so I couldn't install 4.3.0. I wonder if the ati driver that supposedly 4.2.0 uses for 7500 is looking for the card to be agp? Mine's a pci but my guess is that you know that based on the PII 300 I've tried nearly every color depth offered short of the mono. I figure if it isn't going to work with 256 colors, depth isn't the problem. Anybody know where to find a good XF86Config-4 sample? All of the one's I've seen are showing multiple monitors. I just want the one to work.
Actually the ATI sample is a good one to follow. Also, don't try to use 4.3, stick with 4.2, 4.3 has too many new things in it, it won't build unless you've got a bleeding edge install. Also teh ATI drivers are divded into the two versions of X for a reason, they are specifically coded, and won't work with any other versions. I said about you using Mandrake, as pretty much everyone here who has tried Mandrake has failed miserably and had endless problems solved by formating their HDD That's all. Also in teh XFConfig file you must specify if your using PCI or AGP, I forget where now been ages since I worked in Linux, check teh man pages, but it by default uses AGP, as that is the most common. Cheers dude.
ATI? What kind of ATI card do you have? I have the Radion 7200, and it works like a charm! Also, in GRUB, tell it to not probe, don't now if it works though, I haven't had to try it.
Re: Stupid Xserver! On my soon - to - be web/ftp server, I have selected all of the packages that I want, and I tell it to install, but it gets stuck right before it formats the hdd! I need help! Also, I have left it for hours on end, and NOTHING!!
Your using Redhat 9 on the P2 right ? (read from other thread) Well while all of the Linux distros will technically work on a 486 with 64 MB of RAM, actually using a newer distro on one, especially Redhat's fat ass, isn't going to be fun. Although I wouldn't think it would take hours. You did a media check right ? If not, make sure you do, as one of your CDs might be knackered, and why it won't install. Also make sure that your IDE controller is supported, as if it isn't, then it won't be able to properly access the HDD (and hence not format) also make sure all your cables are secure Also welcome to teh forums
It worked.... I got it to work once, but then i deleted it so I could have the GUI. Then the mother-******* peace of ******* **** didn't work, **** damnit...
