Don't they check for this kind of thing before shipping ? I always assumed they do so would have picked up something like this, it's pretty lame if they don't.

I think Haswell is quite bad for it. 100% load of anything was 100 degrees C on all cores, could tell something was up.

Its under warranty, have a number to call tomorrow so hopefully will get it swapped out soon!

    1.1-1.2 I think

    Got a return number.

Props to intel tbh, fairly painless.

Just to say Intel are pretty good with returns, arranged courier and turned it around same day it went back.

Now to keep it or to try for a K series :D

I've built an HTPC with a 4790K over the last few days - like you I loaded it up with IBT and the damn thing hit 95C with a Corsair H80i! The BIOS had it running at close to 1.3V - after some tweaking I got it down to ~1.15V with a nice little 4.5GHz overclock - temps down to 85C. Not ideal, but under normal conditions the temps never seem to get above 70C, 30C idling.

Decided that I would give it a go.

Under the Freezer 7 it hits around 80 on ibt, I have now dropped the volts to 1.050V and it is in the low 70's, that will do me :)

Very, very similar to my first experiences with Haswell. Glad it's better. Delid it and you'd get even better temperatures. ;)

Is this to do with AVX instructions?

    Try Prime 95 26.6.

Not wanting to be shot down in flames but I still say it's uneven mounting of the cooler, especially as two cores are sensible and the other two cooking themselves.

Happens whatever cooler is used, stock with pins or aftermarket with screws and a bracket.

Will take its top off :)blush:) next week as it is oem and report back :geek:

Do you use a specific thermal gunk [or application method] or just whatever came with the cooler?

Sounds like you're unluckier at the silicon lottery than I am.

I use whatever I have to hand, if testing I used some ultra cheap ebay stuff.

It isn't the cause of this problem, the huge temp difference between cores will be due to a poor intel TIM bond between the die and the heat spreader. Last CPU I had when replaced was fine with the same sinks and compound.

I am not much of a clocker these days but there are many people with similar issues and large discrepancies between cores when having a browse on youtube, even with the new Kaby stuff.

I had same problem with an i5 I bought from CEX, it was hitting 100 and throttling at stock, I lopped the top off now I can pump so much volts through it and it doesn't even hit 80, seems like the TIM gives up the ghost after a while/

IBT has been known to burn processors to smithereens. I wouldn't recommend an air cooler unless you're using Noctuas. If you can, change to an AIO. If that is still not within your budget, then try reapplying your thermal paste and see if the mounting is correct.
