If only that would work. You'd lose the bios and the graphics and sound chips the games were programmed specifically for. your forgetting that the bios on the thing is basically its OS. Sure it uses computer parts (HDD and p3 chip are only things exactly computer on it) The DVD drive reads backwards. normal drives read from inside out and it reads from the outside edge inwards. the GPU is built right onto its mobo and so is its sound. your idea at first sound nifty, but it would work. maybe someones idea to change out the CPU *might* work but i doubt it. sure, M$ is losing money on this but they covered almost all their bases. ( cept for hacking the bios to get linux on it :D )

oh heres and idea. take the sides and the recessed part of the top and make them into plexi windows sorta. then find the activity line on the HDD IDE (dunno which it it is but i can tell ya that it a is a seagate 9 GB drive) tap into that line and fill this thing with green LEDS. hey try it with the DVD drive too. now whenever your HDD or DVD are active your X-Box will flash green. same concept as the HDD led on your comp but cooler.

I'm not saying that the GameCube is bad, it has some very good games. I'm just saying the overall game theme's are set more at the younger age level. There are some games for GC that are targeted more at young adult/adult gamers (Metroid Prime being one of them). It's still an amazing console. And yes, it's physical features do play a roll in the age group that it's targeted for. First, it's smaller, discs are smaller, and it's made to look simplistic. Simple marketing strategy. It also costs a lot less money. Young kid's don't have $300 (now $200), and their parents are more likley to spend $200 (now $150) on a GameCube with more appropriat games anyway. It's as simple as that.

On a completely different subject, has anyone seen Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell for Xbox? It looks super awsome. And everyone that went to E3 say the gameplay and graphics are amazing.

I didnt actually mean that you could still play xbox games...
But think about it.. X-Box is made by ms, all the games for the xbox will more than likely come out for the pc.. so in theory, you would still have a xbox. And you would have to buy a new dvd drive, but you could just rip the front off of the original one. For sound, i'd just buy a motherboard with onboard sound.

    Good point there.

If the xbox is basicly a pc, it must word on the same type of program structure. The dumbasses at ms wouldnt make their own OS for the xbox. They'd use some drilled up version of windows, or dos, but i dout that.

But you would need a special dvd drive or a program that reads the dvd how the xbox reads it, as morphine said, it reads the disks backewards. YOu might be able to fiddle with an old dvd drive, reverce the polarity on the motor, but the lazer might b a little difficult. The IC's in the drive would screw up though.

Think about it though, if the data is recorded backwards, and the disk is span backwards, revercing the polarity on the motor (the one for the spinny thingy) would possibly work. I'll have a play with one :D

I had a guy ask me to vacuform him a clear case, but he never did come back with dimensions or a design.

I think the last thing was just the X without all the slotted bits.

Microsoft's Embedded OSes are really mature at this point. They don't have near the problems of their desktop counterparts. I think that is due to the limited hardware they have to support and it is harder for the user to do stupid things.

Linux has been running on Dreamcast hardware(Which used WinCE) for awhile now, but Sega doesn't get the same amount of hatred.

Yeah, like I said, Halo was way too hyped.

Xbox has some games that are aimed at kid's too you know. I just woke up so I can't think of anything except Blinx, that one comming out this fall. And we all pretty much agree that Xbox's are for the more mature gamer. But wait, it has some kid games on it too! Well it's with every console, Nintendo did not make Resident Evil and Tekken did they? No. They are aiming at the younger age group, it's not what I think, it's what they are doing. Listen to some of the interviews. They say they are focusing attention on "younger gamers". I'm not trying to start a fight over this, I'm just telling you *Nintendo's* marketing strategy. It was a console designed for kids, and a lot (not all) of the games are following that trend for the GC.

    [MOD MODE]

Please try to stick to the subject of the thread; modding an
X-Box. If the thread continues to veer off, a move into gaming is in order.

    Have a Nice Day

I think I'm getting mixed signals here, what are you trying to say?

Same guy that wanted a clear case went and painted and ran all sorts of LEDs through the controllers. Powered them right off of the controller.

heres a sugestion. go to ebay. buy a broken XBOX. that way youll get the case real cheap compared to buying the whole thing and riping it apart. then buy a mATX mobo. and building yourself a comp inside an XBOX case. oh one more thing, buy a laptop DVD drive and go to www.cableclub.com and get a converter for it. it will take PCMCIA and turnm it into molex and IDE. there you go

After my warranty runs out I will mod mine. I'm thinking about replacing the jewel with a window. Definetly have some fun inside. Not too sure about making it run linux or whatnot... Some Xbox games are really good =).

http://www.enigmah.com/ have released the new Enigmah chip. THis chip allows for

Only 29 Easy To Solder Wires (Soon to be 12 wires)
All Backups of XBOX games will boot flawlessly
All Import Original XBOX games will boot flawlessly
Boots games from ALL release groups - not just some of them
NEW No-Patch Hack - boots all games without any patches
All online gaming possibilities tested with no spy issues
Compatible with CDR/CDRWDVDR/DVDRW (However DVD should be used for best results)
Can use cheap unbranded general purpose DVDR media
Universal design that works on all models from all regions (USA/JAP/PAL)
Manual switching of kernels for stability (auto switching seemed unreliable after much testing)
All wiring points are VERY easy - no IC's to solder to - all presoldered pads.
Multiple Region DVD Dongles can be used (XBOX normally locks onto 1 region)

AND THEY ARE DEVELOPING A LINUX SHELL that you can flash to the chip.

has to be said, the xbox does need modding badly, the jewel looks stupid :), as for the cube, i can safely say its mint, rate it better than the PS2, and the Xbox has yet to impress me yet, all the hype about halo was unfounded, ok it looks nice, but the gameplay is so sodding slow that it just made me fall asleep, u cant have a FPS game with a pad and expect it to play well :), im waiting to see how awfully dues ex plays on the PS2 compared to the PC
