Hi all this is my forst post, so i will get to the point! right i have watercooled my main pc (not overclockd just wanted silence) & had it working very well for a few months & now i wanna take the next step in smug git bragging rights, i want to submerse a mainboard in liquid, so the question is do you know of any (cheap, im an unemployed stident so dont cost me a lot) none conductive liquids, the only thing that i am planning on submersing is the mainboard, processor, & cards, psw & drives are being kept dry. the plan is to use an old pc from an auction to dontate the parts & it will not be overclocked so hopefully it will not create a lot of heat & its only job will be as an mp3 server on my network, look good set next to my hifi system (seting it up to run monitorless like the in car pc in my mums 306) & as a nother machine to have ud running on, anyone got any advice? sorry if this sounds crazy but im typing it as i think of it (one of those rare flashes of insanity & genius)
Not exactly sure how you would accomplish this, but sounds cool, you could drop some fish into it and have a window. Pure water is a very poor conductor(PURE water H20). I have seen somewohe who submersed their whole pc in a fishtank, so it is possible.
waht im planing on doing is putting the machine in a fishtak, cant have fish in there as they will poloute the fluid (think for a minute) or whatever i use will be bad for the fish, what i am after is if anyone knows of any non condictive liquids, i was thinking about antfreeze as water will pick up contaminants from the surrounding area
oh i forgot to put on my last post when i get the plan straight in my head i will be doing a writeup with plenty of pictures of the build & the final product being posted to my site
Mission Sub Check out what the mad dudes under @ OC Tools have been up to http://www.octools.com/index.cgi?caller=articles/submersion/submersion.html Your Bro's system RoCkS.............. Do you know how much a zx spec is to Buy NOW!! My cousin has 10, yes 10, all boxed
its a nice idea but i cant afford that, im a student, no change that an unemployed student who does not get any financial help or anything & lives @ home with his parents so it has to be cheap cheap & cheap, already have an old tank i can use so its one less thing to buy
This is an area that I know nothing about, but I have read in PCAnswers about 18months ago that about someone who had sunk their mobo in some sort of oil. I will try to find it, but no garentees as I have lost loads of stuff when I moved.
According to TechTV, hydrofluoroether is a good chemical to submerge the pc in. They did it on tv, the link is http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/supergeek/story/0,24330,3340252,00.html As for cost I don't know, but if you are broke and have watercooling, you are doing good. If you really want bragging rights, get a part time job and spend some $$
hi well i was thinknig of some sort of oil as it would not corrode the compnents, my watercooling rig is all homemade (including my heatsink to waterclock mod as well as custom holdon with the 4 holes on amd boards, does not move even when my pair of monitor audio subs are making my computer desk & case sing along with the music) the pump is a ver cheap but farely reliable (dont ask the make as it has no lables or anything on it but i get good flow rate & it runs 24hrs a day ) & the system is silent as i run pipes out of a hole in my wall (thank you hammer drill ) & the radiator is mounted outside where there is always a breeze. i would get a job but my parents are kind eough to fund me all the lovely money i need (wishing they hadent funded me the money for my subs) & when i do get a job i need all a the money to get a bird as pimped out watercooling & modded cases does not do a lot for lasses (wel apart from my ex, she came up with so much smutty inuendo about the size of my waterblock & lengh of hose, leave you to figure it out)
Well I don't think hydrofluoroether will corode your parts, but like I said, keep to just plain watercooling, and you are fine. Personally I have seen several computers that were submerged in everything from oil to liquid nitrogen, and I just think that it looks cooler to have tubes running around in a regular case. The submerged ones alwayse look crappy because of the wires that you have to use to keep all of the liquid hating components outside, and then you have to find a place to put them. Plus the aquarium will never look as sweet as a well modded case. It is like the guy that took a car and started growing grass on the outside, it was definately a conversation piece, but I would take a good looking cheap car anyday
The HFE that tech TV used is $220/gallon. In their test case, they used 4 gallons plus an elaborate dry ice/radiator combo. The case was on its side and the size of two full size towers. They actually added too much dry ice and the system temp dropped to negative 37f and the computer would not boot. At one point they shut the rig off and you could see the liquid boiling over the bare Athlon core. It was quite awesome. However to keep the liquid from evaporating it would have to be totally sealed. What kind of friends do you have where a watercooled rig doesn't give you bragging rights? By the way corrosion rate is less than that of the same component exposed to ambient air. If you dilute the HFE with water then the corrosion rate is slightly faster than that of ambient air.
thefreinds i have where watercooling my pimped out rig does nnot give me bragging rights are simply people who dont kno about computers at all, not even my parents were impressed after all the mods done to the system!! but lasses for some reason are verrrryyy interested when i tell them i have watercooled my rig when they ask what im running (stil cant get me a lass mind but they dont half flock after me twhen they need help ) anyway i thought about using some sort of mineral oil but i heared that it is not very good at removing heat (maby i should start watercllong the p233 running in the boot of my mothers peaugeot 306 as it runs very hot & a small 12v pump should handle it)
