Spec: CPU - i7 8700k Mobo - ASUS ROG Strix Z390-F Gaming RAM - 32GB DDR4 3200MHz Corsair Dominator GPU - Zotac GeForce 1080Ti Mini Games installed on Samsung 970 EVO 1TB NVME OS - Win 10 21H2 installed on Samsung 850 EVO 250GB NVME Hi All, Approx 2 weeks ago out of the blue I loaded up R-Type Final 2, which has always ran super smooth at full whack (1080p resolution). The last time i played was approx 6 weeks prior. This time however the game was very choppy. At first I thought it might be down to a bug in the game as I had just installed a new DLC for it. About a week later (this is now a few days ago) I tried playing Ys IX Monstrum Nox. Again this usually runs great at 1080p with the settings cranked up but this time it ran awful. Other games suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, I do not know exactly when this started happening. For the last two months I've been playing The Legend of Heroes - Trails in the Sky. Since this is an older game, there is no "performance hit." Most obvious thing to look at is the GPU settings but all seems OK here. Drivers have always been the latest. I have a feeling it's not the GPU at all and something else that has caused it, but can't put my finger on it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, Rax
Have you checked your gpu temperatures? Have you tried cleaning out drivers with DDU and reinstalling?
Actually i haven't checked temps. But I did use DDU and installed the driver that was released in August - I know 100% games were running fine with that driver version. I will do some more testing and look at the GPU temps. Thanks for your response.
It might sound trite, but have you checked your refresh rate in NVCP matches your required rate for the monitor(s)? I had a situation recently (unsurprisingly for me ) where I have no idea what happened but my refresh rate had reset down from 165/144Hz to 60 and that was causing choppiness that puzzled the hell out of me for a bit.
Drivers would have been my first port of call. If that's not fixed it I'd check: - temps, something might need a clean and repaste - bios, check xmp is still enabled, all ram is present and accounted for, if you have an overclock, try running without it - background programs, is there something using too much resource that's decided to auto load.
Temps seem OK - GPU doesn't go above 70ish BIOS also seems fine. XMP is still enabled. I've had it on auto-overclock for a while, although mild. I'll try turning it off though and see if changes anything. I did have a look at background processes - again looks OK but will check this again. I did find something else though...thought I'd look inside the case and see if there's a build up of dust. There isn't, but there is a spider-web inside! Further investigation required.
Spiderman. Apple fan boi and notorious prankster. What a cock. Although you likely won't have prior data to compare it against, you could use afterburner or gpu-z to record fps and other data to try and see what's happening. Also maybe a Windows update that includes a fix for CPU side channel vulnerabilities that's also needed performance?
