So my aging Nokia 6600 is really starting to limp and die.. It takes it almost a minute to open a txt message, another minute before I can start typing, and then freezes up for 2 minutes while it sends it. If I receive more than 1 txt at a time, it just shuts off. Calls are even worse, 90% of the time when I accept a call, sound is all distorted and then starts to lag before snapping back to normal quality and slowly starting to lag again and has a 50% chance of either dropping the call or shutting off.

So yea, basically, the phone is on the brink of death, it's served me for 6 years, it's got so many dents and scratches and cracks that I'm amazed it even works this well.

Anyways, on to my question.. what'd be a good phone to buy? I've had an iPhone for a short amount of time and it was nice, but sound volume was BLEH and the 3G one is slightly expensive. I'm slightly wary of Blackberrys, and absolutely despise Samsungs. I trust Nokias 100% though.

I'd rather like a touchscreen and stuff but at the end of the day, I'm interested in something that'll last. I've considered the G1 but the browser looks so slow and clunky and stuff that it's not really attractive to me..

    (I'm on T-MobileUSA btw)

Not sure if I can foot the 500$ price I'd have to pay to get it out of contract through eBay or whereever and then unlock it though, otherwise I'd snap one up :p

hmm well being a tech forum i would recomend any HTCphone. particualy the TyTNII or the Touch Pro. but if they are not available on your network the could cost a fair bit

and given your view on nokias just stick with what you like. i ha a nokia for a while before i got an iphone the onl reason i dont have it still is cause i broke it when i was very drunk.

as for you blackberry views. my father has a balckberry fromwork and its a wonderfull phone but i will say if you do need one as it will help you with your job then get one but if it wont help with your job then dont as is useless otherwse imho

If you want a Nokia, then the N85 is supposed to be quite good, but it's not a touchscreen. It's also quite dear, although still cheaper than the iPhone. Otherwise nothing really beats the iPhone for touchscreen usage :thumb:

HTC Touch... purely because it's a touchscreen phone not made my Apple...

that, the N95 (because poeple are getting rid of LOADS on the 'bay, to buy N96's with their Christmas money)... or the N91, I know it's an old phone, but mine lasted me an age (until I got hit by that bloody bus -_-')

Really disapointed with mine to be honest. Had it since august, thought it was argeat phone, but now, well the charger has died, the battery only lasts for 2 days before it needs charging again. It's crashed so many time's it's not even funny anymore.

Whats worse is that Orange have pretty much told me to jog on about the charger fault, they say it has no warranty !! Gone back to my Samsung D900.

SE phones are excellent for picture taking - but get one with a xenon flash (the c905).

Do you know that AT&T has Refurbished iPhone 3G on sale now? the 8 GB for $100 and the 16 GB for $200. They all require service packages with the purchase. No coupon or cash back reward may be provided in connection with the iPhone. That sounds pretty cool except for the long long contract.

What do you do with your phone if i may ask? Do you just call people and text? Do you want to browse the internet? Do you want to watch media? Do you just want to take pictures?

Once you decide this find which one will meet your needs. For me I take pictures call and text nothing else so i use an N95. Just dont get an iPhone or G1 cause you think its what you need.

Yea, I've been tempted, but I don't want to switch to AT&T, their rates are pure evil, plus I hate their customer service.

I got my Dad's iPhone 1st gen, suits my needs (SMS/Calls), I originally got it for his birthday for 150$, so either way, it's a good price :p

    Thread Hijack! Customizable phones?

Sorry, but I need a new phone too because wireless internet makes me all warm and fuzzy. The very idea of having fluid wikipedia, reference.com and imdb access anywhere, all the time, is just epic - it makes you bulletproof in every situation (apart from ones involving actual bullets.)

I was thinking recently how little customisability and open source control there is in phones normally: for example, I thought it would be cool to replace the signal bars with a digital numerical readout of the signal strength. Stuff like that. Or customise the fonts and menu layouts. But does any phone offer that? Most operating systems don't even do it very well yet, although XP's appearance settings kinda did. I can't program and I know jack about firmware modding, etc. but I'd love to give it a try. Is there a phone/PDA that's good for this without massive amounts of warranty-breaking baloney?

Jailbreaking does nothing to network, it just enables you to run w/e you want on it, unlocking is what affects network-locking
