can anyone suggest some free/ budget priced full games that will run on my laptop?
I mean full games, not some cheap 5 minute windows game.

I use my laptop for DJ'ing, so have had to (in windows XP) turn off all acceleration for the graphics (8400M GS)
    The other specs are: 3gb memory, core2duo T5870 @ 2ghz
drive space is not an issue.

I know I'm totally abysmal at gaming, so it's just for the times when I'm bored.

    suggestions please.

The original C&C and I think Red Alert have been released for free. Xmoto is good to kill a bit of time too.

GTA Vice city. fun game, low spec requirements, should be able to find it for ~$5.

edit: second the recommendation below for trackmania. awesome game.

Castle of the Winds (1989) was announced free by its creator, in 1998. It is a fully graphical RPG with 100 per cent randomized dungeons. Originally for Windows 3.x, it will run on Windows XP and does not require graphics acceleration of any form.

Download parts 1 and 2 from its creator, here.

lets see, counter strike 1, counter strike condition zero, and most importantly: counter strike source (Cs:s). love the games to death, source is the best for random play. pubbing and eventually joining a clan is one thing but it gets you occupied wen theres nothing to do. you might also want to consider a mouse if u dont already have 1.

    Good Hunting ;)

The original Half-Life can be picked up second hand for a pound or two and is a great low end shooter these days. Deus Ex is great fun for those who prefer a more serious and difficult game too.

Any of the old Lucasarts adventure games (Monkey Island, Sam and Max, Day of the Tentacle, Indy and the Fate of Atlantis) can run on low-end system absolutely perfectly and are great for some funny and quick plays.

Google Home of the Underdogs. It's an abandonware site and full of excellent games, some in dire need of a remake.
As for the Lucasarts stuff, you may be able to find it but most of the classics are dos based and run best with SCUMMMV (which I have just found out you can install on iphones!!), also none of the Lucasarts stuff is freeware or abandonware, but I'm sure you could find it. If you're looking for a real classic try loom!
Stalwart favourites on my laptop are UFO (XCOM) Enemy Unknown and Colonization.

What sort of games are you into? I could recommend a title for most genres.

Cardjoe: no mention of full throttle?

Deus Ex, one of the greatest games ever made!!!

Also Max Payne and / or Max Payne 2 should run fine on your laptop and are both great games.

You caould also look at the original Fallout or Fallout 2

    DJ you say? Try audiosurf.
And any other indie game. Most are addictive, easy on the hardware and cheap. World of goo, line rider 2, redlynx trials 2,...

No One Lives Forever 1 + 2 can be had for £3 and £5 respectively from amazon. I've run Nolf on an MSI Wind, so no problems there.
