    Hey all,

I'm looking for a new printer for a friend of mine. She'll be going off to college in the fall and her birthday is coming up so thought this would be quite fitting. Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions or advice regarding printers? I want a relatively small one, just so it doesn't take up much space in a dorm room. It doesn't have to be incredibly fancy, just enough to get through printing documents and occasional pictures and whatnot. Last - and perhaps the deciding factor - something reasonably priced.

    Thanks.

I've had a epson C86 since my first year at uni (almost 18mnths now).

Places over here do the carts for around £1, and since they're individual it makes it cheap as i do a lot of black and red printing, but not much of the other colours.

i have c86 as well, but one thing i will say is that it really uses ink like nobody's business.

I have had a couple of Epson printers. I am not sure whether this is the case with all of their products but they seem to take an age to "warm up". It's pretty frustrating. I have also had a Lexmark which was ready to print the instant it was turned on. It was also much quicker than the Epsons.

Maybe a Hewlett Packard Deskjet 3320?
I've got one here (well, it's not mine, my dads) and its pretty quick, and ready to print as soon as you switch it on.
It's also a pretty small thing and the cartridges for it are not very expensive, as ink cartridges tend to be.

I'd take a good look into cartridge pricing and the expected life of a cartridge, and calculate the price-per-page.
As your friend is going to college, she'll probably won't have much money to spend on computer related things, so printers with a low price-per-page would be optimal.

Also, you didn't mention wether the printer has to be an inkjet or a laser printer.
If you got a nice budget to spend on a printer, try to get a small laserprinter.
Laserprinters always have had the lowest price-per-page anyway, and with a single tonerdrum you'll print loads more than with an ink cartridge.
That way she won't run out of ink as quick. Ink always runs out at the worst possible time, and with a laser printer she won't get into such situations as quickly as with an inkjet.

I agree with McKaamos. i had a HP PSC (1200 i think?) at uni. Its small and compact, as its a scanner and photocopier, its very usefully. I used the photo copier alot.Useful when boring books from libaray. When set on the highest printing mode, and using photo quililty papers, you can get some good prints. It was an inkjet.

If any thing you should defo buy a all in one printer.
Hp inks cost around £30 for color, and £20 for black.
But these days you can buy cheap replacement, or fill them yourself.

I would also recomend Cananon. They make good printers. As my girl friend does alot of high quaility color printing, she used a HP PSC and a Cananon. She said that the Cananon ink lasted longer, and had a much better print.

But in your case, as its for a friends and what you have said, go for the PSC. They cost just less £100.
    Somthing similar to this one.

    Hope that helps.
