Anyone got anything planned for this year? Haven't been anywhere for two and a half years, but have just booked a week away to Fuertaventura, not been there for a decade so will be interesting to see how the boom and bust has effected it. So, plans? Or is the holiday cash getting used on PC upgrades and folding farm leccy bills
I love that place... lots of wonderful surf bars and beaches to chill the feth out on, right? I'm just heading down Cornwall for a week with aload of friends the week before my birthday in July. Nothing major but I haven't had a good holiday in about four years due to a) being a student bum, b) not enough cash to go with c) busy with work (tragic huh?) Next year I'm aiming to get my bike on the road again (Quad...) and ride to South of France for the fun of it.
Made it a personal goal to go on a hike each weekend in summer, even starting a little early with a backpacking trip coming up on the 20th. Also, snow permitting, it's looking like a 4th of July ski trip might me in order. No travelling or long breaks, but when you live next door to paradise why leave?
I just got back from a week in NYC, omg what a place! I've only the Isle of Wight Festival and Glastonbury in the summer, perhaps a quick trip up to the inlaws and some walking in Scotland, but that depends if i'd rather go up there and ski at Christmas :s
I'll visit the Metalcamp Festival in Slovenia in July for 1 week and in August the Wacken Festival for 5 days with some friends. But I'm also planning to make a trip later this year to some more far away place where it will be still hot and I can lay at the beach. But nothing booked yet.
Hah, at the end of summer I am coming down to Portsmouth from Scotland Its been good skiing the last few years around my parents area (top of cairn gorms) so can recommend it fully. Where abouts are the inlaws? Best walking I have had is in Skye if you can over there... Cullin Ridge is pretty good, tuff walk tho.
a fellow Bit-Techer and I + 2 others just booked 7 days in Djerba (island off the coast of Tunisia) for June, cant wait. Thinking about organising a skiing hol nxt yr with my bro, sis and her bf. any recommendations - we went to Whistler with the family last Easter.
Was in mainland Tunisia a couple of years ago (Hammamet), if Djerba is anything like it you will have fun. I hate going to over-commercialised places and it just feeling like home but with better weather, Tunisia was great with all the modinas everywhere. Seemed like a bit of an adventure as you couldn't rely on everyone being able to speak english
I might go to Germany but I don't think I will be anywhere special this summer. I was in France last year and TBH I wasn't at all impressed.
I'm off to a little place called Le Mans in June. Apparently they have some sort of motor race on at the same time we're there. Which is nice.
Was up in Soussusvlie, Namibia 3 weeks ago. Just back from Chobe in Botswana, Victoria falls Zimbabwe and Zambia. Going up to see Great Zimbabwe in Masvingo on the 21st and 22nd if Air Zim still is running, we'll see. Going down to the coast to hunt outside of Port Elizabeth the 2nd-5th of June. The 16th-19th of June should see us into the Okavango Delta. The 25th and 26th of June we are in Barre, Mozambique to see the Whale Sharks. 2nd and 3rd of July we are booked to see the SALT imaging center, the largest optical telescope in the southern hemisphere. The 4th-7th I'm off alone to the Knysna Oyster Festival, since my wife doesn't like them. August 6th-9th, we are off to Sabi Sands to see the Leopards. And that is as far out as we have planned, since we aren't sure where we will be by then. We are trying very hard to get a 2 day booking to see the Gorillas up in Rwanda, but we need to see what the timing looks like.
We have been trying for over a year to get there, but it's surprisingly difficult to get to. We can't drive, since the company cars we have can't cross the border. There are no scheduled flights into Masvingo, despite there being an airfield. Given the local and international politics effecting Zim right now, it's not a good time to be white, western and driving across the country. The best we can see is to fly into Bulawayo which is a 4 hour overland transfer...not cheap. But it's been a long term goal of my wife's and she'll kill me if we leave Africa and not see it.
Quality, make sure you get down to Old Portsmouth and sit in the sun with a beer, and a BBQ on the common or the beach, a wander down Albert road and hit all the pubs and a curry, Pompy is a really good night out with some very old pubs. The inlaws are just short of Fort William in Ballachulish, I was up there at Christmas last year and got one day on snow on the Nevis range before it warmed up, how gutted was I, had a great Hogmanay in the Clachaig Inn at Glencoe, my God you Scots know how to celebrate new years, what a fantastic night! I'm fairly jealous of you, I wish I could have visited the Cairn Gorms but I ran out of time, I'll have to try harder this year! I've never been to Skye, managed to get over to Mull and Iona last September in the awesome weather you guys had and fell in love with Scotland!
