Okay so in the middle of summer I'll get back to Texas from my Dad's with two old gateways that I can use for red hat linux 6.0 servers one will be a dedicated web server the other my file server. All I have are the plans and I want just a simple cube but have no idea what the theme, color, or material its made of should be. All of this is subject to change, of course seeing as I could bring back some more then 2 old gateways as He's cleaning out the old office and replacing with optiplexes. So the front Side And a diagonal view So thats the plan ATM, feel free to comment and suggest color themes or material preferably wood or plastic as I dont have tools for metal. Oh and I couldn't find an aptly sized PSU but its a little bigger than ITX PSU's also will have 2 cd-r and 2 floppy with one 20GB hdd for the web server and my spare 80 for the file server. They'll fun ME till I finish my 1100 page linux book
Please don't use ME as an OS. I feel dirty even calling it an OS. I doubt that it will work well as a server. Get Win2k at least. I doubt you'd need to read a 1000 page book to get the hang of Linux these days. Try Ubuntu. Read the forums for a nice and easy guide to a debian server. As for the theme or materials, where are you going to be housing this server? You could just build a simple frame and leave it alone if you'll just be chucking it in a closet. I'd suggest aluminum L profile and some MDF sheet.
1100 pages to learn Linux? That just nuts! Read through the Gentoo Manual (10-20 pages online), and you'll get a feeling of what Linux is For OS, I'd go for Debian tough. Use it on all my servers, and it's great. All you need to know (for starters) is how to boot from CD, fill in dialogs, use apt-get, edit some files and use google...
The LEGO theme I'm not 100% on as I have allot of legos but hopefully enough as for the lego design it wont be elaborate with all the clear brick and lighted brick gimmicks. As for debian I'm still going to use red hat as well as finish my book so I have a rather complete understanding of linux rather than a 20 page article giving me basics.
I voted for coffee table because I want to see it done. Lego would be cool but it can never look very professional. Whatever you do it should be pretty fun.
Well I was leaning towards that and the army because I need a place to eat in my room rather than my computer desk which doesn't have much anyways and the army theme because of Americas Army the game.
Okay so a quick redesign and a choice of materials. The boxes will all be made of 1/2 inch thick wood of some sort(depends on what is available and affordable) and with a red stain. Anyways, pics. With stain. See through/wire frame. Close up of the back The drives up top. This project will start about mid summer.
So its going to be a coffee table? Looks like a cool idea, although I would have wanted it to be flat topped, just as a more efficient design for a coffee table, and more conventional. I want to make something like this, totally stealthed, so you have no idea its a computer at all. Wires run down a leg and out under the floorboards sort of thing.
I want to make a coffee table but use a metal frame with smoked glass so and a watercooled system so all you can see is glowing tubes and wires through the glass also a slot loading dvd driv built into the frame so it appears your trying to shove a cd into the table leg
Design change Okay so with my brand new vaio thats been rotting for 3 years (first made in 02) I wanted to change the design so that it could accomadate the laptop with all its little doodads I got from the spy museum. And I plan on adding doors to the front to get to the innards and a door covering the laptop. Any ideas for the legs/feet would be nice and if I should cut a logo in the top (Might go for a zeon logo/symbol) So here are the pics Top Bottom Front Close up of where I'm going to keep the laptop Close up of the server area Finally a good look at the entire case
