Nice work Macroman and I think I may have some use for that in some future projects. In your article you utilized 3 x 2.5 mm DC Power Sockets, probably out of preference. Could you not get the same effect using audio plug-in cables from Rackshack?

very very useful Macro, i was wondering how to power some of my external mods....

cough ... UFO aluminium mouse mat ... cough

i would imagine you could adapter some wire so you can charge your mobile phone thru one of the outputs.

If you mean Phono/RCA type connectors then yes. Don't use the "jack" type as used on headphones/microphones since they will short out the PSU as you plug/unplug them. (Not a good idea ;) ).

Im still confused on this, what would you plug into the end? is it a special kind of jack that you would solder on to some wires?

I'm about to attempt this project, very soon in fact... just as soon as I manage to get all the bits and pieces together :) I need it for my NK204 MO LCD which arrived yesterday. It's all very well having a long serial cable but when you have no power outside your computer case, it makes mounting a little hard ;)

If you want to plug your MO screen in, then you will need to make up a cable with a floppy style connector on one end and the plug shown in the pic above on the other end. Then just connect the wire to the LCD and the other to (if it's a wide voltage LCD) to one of the 12V outputs (otherwise use the 5V one).

I'd double check the voltage of your screen before plugging anything in, I'd hate to accidentally get it wrong and blow it up :(

Great idea this, I've used something similar for my last two lcds (both externally mounted).
For the first I used some nice fat audio 6.35mm audio jacks just 'cause the plugs look damn porno ;). Only trouble is you cant unplug them while the powers on as they can short-out = not good. Fine if youre careful/have a switch though.
My current plate has proper 2.5mm mini connecors, mainly for the lcd but I also have one for an external neon and one to power an internal neon from an external transformer (complete with oversized in-line socket!! :(). Basically just for a bit of extra connectivity.
Heres a shot of how mine works (clickable), theres a bit more on the lcd aspect at http://www.icehardware.net/guides/parallel_lcd/ (apologies for the pimp)

I'd also like an answer to that question... and what size would it be?

If you can get it from Mappers or RS, what is the order number for the braid?

I've had the, um, 'bright' idea of running my FFB steering wheel off my PC.....

    problem is, it needs 24V.

Could I connect 2 12V leads in serial or something?
