Other Surely it is time for USB to become the default socket type for 5v power?

I got a new switch today and noticed it was powered by 5v DC input , there is a little round connection and there was an adapter included. Got me thinking tho, is it not time for the USB socket to become the standard for supplying 5v, particularly on computer equipment?

This would mean far less clutter (I have had to get an 8 way socket although there are an abundance of powered usb sockets in the vicinity!), greater compatibility and easy access to replacements or upgrades.

I think by not agreeing a standard the manufacturers are probably missing a trick here.

But they'd have to supply the cable and still bundle an adapter surely? You know what these companies are like.

Not all switches will be located near a PC, Plus you have to take into account that each USB hub provides 5v that has to be shared between every port that is connected to it. Unless it's powered by the wall.

In the case of my switch, I would have happily accepted a power adapter with a usb shaped connecter if the switch had a usb power connector, I don't think it would have cost the manufacturer any extra to just change the sockets on the item and the adapter. All that would need to be changed is the sockets from barrel type to usb type.

I think taking all this into account you would still have flexability. If a mains adapter with a USB socket is provided and you need to use that then do, otherwise wouldn't it be nice to have the option to put that army of redundant USB cables and ports to use if they are available?

Would be nice to have the option, but the other thing to consider is that if the PC that is powering it is switched off, then anything connected via that switch would be unable to access the network/internet.

Depends, I have 2 PCs, the one with the ASUS G31 board sustains power to the USB ports when the PC is off, the ABIT 945 does not. I still think its a viable option looking when you consider how modern technology generally behaves.

yeah, a mini b plug for power wouldn't be bad at all. it would provide a great deal of flexibility of either having it attached to pc, or use the common mains to mini b cords like many cell phones use. to be on the safe side i would say they should supply the mains cable, and leave it up to the user to use thier own mini b cable.
