OK forgive me if im asking an obvious question cos i really dont know much about surround sound at all. I bought a new amp a while ago (Sherwood RD-7103R) and originally just bought 2 front speakers. (Eltax Monitor 3) Today i bought some rears and a centre (all Eltax Silverstone) and set them all up. All the speakers work find but im unsure of the different settings on my amp and what they do. There is Pro Logic, Hall, Theatre and Stereo. I know what Pro Logic and stereo are but i have no idea what hall and theatre are. Also when watching a film only the theatre setting gives sound out of all speakers but there is a constant buzzing - and pro logic just gives sound out of the centre speaker.

Basically the questions i am asking are
    1) What are the theatre and hall settings?
    2) Why do i only get sound out of all speakers in the theatre settings when watching a film but only get sound in the centre speaker on the other settings?

Thanks for any replies, sorry for the long post!

the theater & hall settings are basically dsp settings, they try & mimic what it wouyld sound liek if you were listening in a hall or a theater

im guessing the problems witht he sound are something is wired up wrong someware

    check all your connections

what input are you usign to play movies (dvd player by digital in, tv by phons pc by phono's etc)

    Cheers for your reply samuelellis.

I have worked out what it is. I was watching a video (no im not technologically retarded but it was comething i taped from the tv and i cant afford a dvd recorder :)) Its cos i have the vcr connected to tv then tv to amp (the vcr is connected by coax so its not a v good connection - i dont have a v good tv :() Im gonna connect vcr to amp via scart and that should stop it as the buzzing cant be heard with cd tuner playing.

    Thanks again

    Is this your receiver?

    http://www.sherwoodusa.com/home_audio/hprec7103_fs.htm

Hall and Theater are DSP modes, most receivers have them, DSP modes are not realy much good most of the time, they can be a bit of a fun for playing about but they do tend to eat up amplifer headroom.

What do you have connected to your reciever E.g.

DVD Player, TV cable/sat box, VHS player, Tivo, Cd Player?

Pritty much anything you connect to it using stereo anolog connection will be played in stereo or Dolby Prologic mode, in Prologic most of the sound is pushed to the center, if it pickes up any matrixed rear channels it will try and place them properly.

If you connect a DVD player using a digital coaxial/optical lead or 6 channel analoge you will be able to use full Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS, this will sound a lot better.

Since Dolby Prologic, Dolby Prologic II has come out in newer receivers this has a better go at making 2 channel surround sources closer to dolby 5.1.

yea that could be the problem

if you have a scart socket on yoru tv connect your vcr by scart to your tv & then yous a 2 phono to 2 phono cable from your tv

video tape will ALWAYS have a place in my equiptment rack :D

If you have an older VHS player it may only record in mono this means no matter what you will get mono, newer VHS players have Nicam and Stereo Hifi modes which can sound much better.

I agree with sam scart could sort out a problem.
