No surprise to me, a lot of the people I know that own 360's have had to send it in for one reason or another
An opt-in survey is not reliable - of course people with broken xboxes feel the need to complain. People whose consoles are working fine would probably feel less inclined to answer another annoying popup survey...
Agree with above. an Opt-In Survey is not accurate. Even though I do know that failure rate is very high. For that matter, mine has failed twice. First one is completely dead, second one I fixed myself.
My flatmate has had to send his 360 back 3 times since he got it due to the RROD problem reoccuring, microsoft have been pretty good about it and have given him a replacement/fixed it each time but 42% doesn't surprise me at all.
^^ same as above, I've witnessed my flatmates xbox being boxed up and sent off on no less than 3 occasions. When it's not with Microsoft it tends to chew games for sustenance... I remember when gta4 came out he got 3 copies one after the other as his xbox chewed the first 2. It must have bin full up after the second one cause it didn't bother eating the 3rd one. Surprisingly the game store happily replaced the disc twice... Now that im grumbling... at least xbox doesn't require an update every time you turn it on.. I'm hacked off with my Sony ps3, every time it gets turned on it wants to make me sit and look at a firmware download and install screen for 20 minutes. I update it, watch a movie (cos that's all it's used for these days) turn it off then turn it on a week later and it wants me to go again. Fook off Sony and just give me everything now rather than trickling crappy insignificant updates my direction. The amount of time it has spent updating itself is probably equivilant to waiting for 3 xbox replacements!
My original Xbox 360 Premium (HDMI + 20gb HD) was purchased the day after launch and is still going strong. It's on for 10 hours a day 5 days a week. Sits happily under the desk at work in it's little dust free drawer. I still think it's down to how you treat them , I really do!
Agreed on opt-in surveys often being off, but my own experience with 360s is abit of a horror show so I have a hard time finding a reason why 42% shouldn't be accurate. A group of us all gather weekly to play games/poker. The host's 360 RROD'd so the next week someone else brought his 360 and set it on top of the dead one. RROD. Another guy goes and grabs his then temps fate and places it on the stack. RRODx3! A PS3 is placed on top and works perfectly. C-c-c-c-c-combo breaker! There are only two other 360s that I've had contact with and both are functional, though one sounds like a banshee and needs to be cleaned out.
+1 for opt in unreliability. I have 2 xboxs, between family and friends adds up to another 14 boxes and only one failure from all of them (and I managed to fix that by reseating the heatsink). There is no doubt that there is huge reliability issues with xbox's but I doubt if it is as high as 42%, I would think nearer 15-20% would be more accurate (which is still shockingly high)
Yup, opt-in surveys are generally BS - I'm pretty sure only Microsoft knows the real percentage. Just to prove a point, my launch 360 is still going strong (touch wood) and I've ignored every single reliability survey.
Again the opt-in throws it off. If you were to base a survey off of my experience it would be 100% failure rate though most of those chocked to death on dust. Currently attemting to fix one at the moment got it back from three rings but it keeps overheating after 10mins gameplay.
If I ever get a 360(which is quite unlikely, I don't like to pay for Live) i'd probably rip it apart and modify beyond belief to keep it cool. Watercooled 360? Hell yeah! Of course, I have yet to have my PS3 fail me, but that's because I rarely use it.
I stripped mine out and fitted into a Lian-Li case. I do aim to watercool it at some point but haven't got round to it as yet.
