I found this website that has some .svg images to use as backgrounds in gnome (ubuntu related).

I just threw some on my desktop, and while they aren't really my style, it is amazing that I can have it "fill screen" without loosing any quality. Then, on top of that, the guy didn't specify a background color, so it is transparent! And you can change your desktop's background color to a solid color or gradient and it changes the entire theme of the graphic!

    (yes, I am easily amused)

SVGs are great... I was doing some DTP work in Scribus last night, and needed a logo in a different colour and different size - changing colour/size in the GIMP would probably have degraded the quality of the .tif I had, but a quick trip to Inkscape and their "Convert Bitmap" function got me a top-quality SVG image that I can resize and re-colour endlessly with no loss of quality.

Firefox 1.0.7 supports svg, but you have to build it yourself with svg support enabled, from what I hear.
