Hi guys, Thanks for all teh advice on here... this is certainly one of the most helpful forums ive been on I have a new question.. I got a new motherboard in my pc as discused in previous threads. I want to test my older intel dual core in on the new mobo to see if its faulty. Is this straight forward? or do i need to know anything special? the old mobo was an Asus P5N su with a dual core intel 2.2 ghz and the new one is Asrock 2CORE1333-2.66G Socket 775 Motherboard with a E2140 Overclocked to 2.66GHz so i want to put the intel 2.2 in the asrock mobo. ta.
They're both S775 boards so I see no problem, apart from the usual static, etc, hazards of handling CPUs.
Agreed. Swapping CPU's is easy. There's not a lot that can go wrong, but if it does go wrong, the risks are big. Be careful and you'll be fine.
just remember your gna have to re-apply some thermal paste, and make sure you clean the CPU PROPERLY first
do they make replacement paste pads? you know the ones that come preattached to oem heatsinks? ie intel
No - you're best off just buying some thermal paste, it doesn't cost much and it will last you ages. Clean the CPU with some meths first (or at least that's what I do).
ahh..after reading the postspreviosu to this i just went ahead and did it.. There was still a thin layer of paste on teh baseof the heatsink...should I apply more to be safe? and also when u say clean ...you mean the whole cpu? thanx
That remaining layer of thermal paste is used stuff, that will most likely decrease the cooling capability of your heatsink. Put some new stuff on there. And, no, you don't clean literally the whole processor. Only the IHS on the top (the silver bit, not the gold contacts). You also need to clean the heatsink base as well. They do make pads, but they are more expensive and are not as good. It is up to you, though I would personally go for paste. If you aren't going to be doing much overclocking, pads should be fine.
Just the top heat-spreader, don't touch the gold contacts. Remove all traces of old paste from both CPU and heat-sink with a clean cloth soaked in IPA, final clean with IPA, blow-dry with hair-drier (setting #3 for fine frisky hair) to remove any moisture produced by evaporative cooling. See Arctic Silver site for how to add fresh compound (even if you're not using their stuff). IPA = Isopropyl alcohol, before you ask. A small aerosol can is very handy, I use it to clean the cooker.
