Hey folks. I'm not all that great with electronics and so am in need of advice.

I''m currently in the process of a mod and wish to keep a switch which is currently a part of the box which is being modded. This one here...(and luckily a link to the part from the maker Swann Series 51 Rocker Switch)

The numbers are those shown on the back of said switch and the connections are as follows:
    1 - Live
    2 - Yellow
    3 - No connector
    4 - Neutral
    5 - Yellow
    6 - No connector

Before anyone comments on the use of 'yellow' to describe a connection I will explain. The two yellows which you can see both went to a 240V-24V transformer so I'm assuming the switch was on/off for DC current out of the transformer as well as the on/off for AC into the transformer (see, told you I have little idea about electronics).

My intention is to either have this as the rocker switch for the PSU via an extension or simply have it as an on/off for two LED strips.

Can this be done? Is it a simple soldering job? Give us a clue guv'nor

I'd guess, looking at this, that it switches both circuits at once. You could easily use it to throw one circuit, but for a PSU switch, it wouldn't be ideal as they need to be momentary.

You could use it for LED strips though :)

Yeah, I know which you mean there, for the PSU switch but I meant the rocker on the back, is it too dodgy to extend that? I do have a couple of antivandals coming for the momentary power and reset.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you Throbbi, that switch only controlled the AC input to the transformer.

As jinq-sea said, you could use one half of the switch to control your LED strips by connecting a yellow 12v wire to pin 1 on the switch and then your LED strips to pin 2.

You may have luck looking for a DPDT On-Off-MOM switch with similar dimensions to the one you have there. That'll allow you to switch the PC on with the MOM function and then switch the LED lights on and off with the ON-OFF functions.

However, I will say that this makes sense in my head but it may not work in the slightest

With proper insulation and connections you should be fine :)
