Hi Guys, I am looking at buying the following for my old man, http://www.scan.co.uk/products/synology-ds411j-4-bay-nas-12ghz-cpu-sata-gbit-lan-2x-usb-1x-esata He is after a 4 bay NAS, around the £250.00 mark, so this is at the top end of his budget. Does anyone have any experience with this NAS, or could advise any on any other 4 bay NAS around this price range? He will be using this for the following: MVK and MP3 streaming to PS3 File Share for general use (documents, photos etc) Windows Backup (Win7 built it etc) Hot Swap, online Raid upgrade That is all really. Any advice or info would be really well received. Thanks
Synology do some of the best home/small office-based NAS's I've seen. I use a DS211j at home and it's astoundingly good. It will do everything you've got in your list and more, trust me.
Thanks for the swift reply on this, really appreciate it. I have also just seen to HUGE QVL, about three times the size of other vendors. Thanks Ph4lanx
You can actually try out the Synology DSM 3.1 interface with a live online demo: http://www.synology.com/enu/products/demo/index.php. It is pretty impressive.
I've also been really satisfied with my Synology. They're more expensive than some of the other options but they have every feature you could want.
Ds411j will be great, it received a small speed boost from Ds410j, which i own see my response to each of your requirements: due to one of the hard drive was clicking on arrival, i had to run my 3-drive RAID5 array with only 2 drives for a while, zero problem rebuilding array when the other disk was inserted.
