My son has around £120 birthday money, and he's interested in a tablet.

Can you lovely people offer some advice/recommendations for tablets in his price range.

Not interested in the Kindle Fire models - far too locked down and restrictive.

    Thanks all

You can pick up a 1st gen 16gb nexus 7 for around £120 which would be perfect or a samsung galaxy tab 2 7

Excellent quality. The screen is better than the 2012 nexus. Your'll need to root it to stock android but that's really easy. 30 minutes and a microsd is all you need.

From what I've read, the nook CPU is a bit underpowered. If that applies to stock android I don't know, as all the reviews were based on non rooted Nooks. But other than that, I've heard good things about them.

I was impressed with my Nook Simple Touch - effectively a basic tablet with an e-ink display and a fairly restricted custom version of android. Not that I'm suggesting you buy the ereader, I just meant overall build quality etc was good. :)

Someone is selling a Nexus locally for around that.

I was looking at the Nook tablets this morning, they do seem pretty decent value for money. If he can wait foir delivery, I might be tempting to throw in the extra for the 10" one.

I'll look up some more reviews.

    Thanks

Or you could just buy him a few interesting books. At aged 8, I find it hard to understand why he would need a tablet. Same goes for a mobile phone...

Maybe my views are a little old, but now is the time to teach him what is essential in life. Gadgets come and go, but knowledge always stays.

I'm with this guy, we are too spoiled nowadays with technology. Spoil them now and what will they be like in the future ? Always expecting.

My advice, don't bother buying them a tablet, if need be buy yourself one and let them use it with you as a family, family time is a hell of a lot more important than people realize.

My Kid likes to watch pictures of herself (*sigh* Girls) She knows how to swipe to the next picture and how to start a movie by tapping on the arrow...
    She's 21 months old :grr:

I see a tablet coming in the near future, if only to get my phone back.

It's the kids birthday money, and the kid's choice. Tablets can be a great educational tool depending on how the kid uses it.

Also it's extremely rude to question someones parenting as you have done.

Guys, I'm looking for advice for a tablet that he wants to buy with his own money.

So, with respect, if you have nothing to add on that front, I'd rather you didn't post anything.

    Thanks

    +1 on family time,
But my 9 year old finds her Sumvision Cyclone Voyager 7" Tab (£70 at Ebuyer now, was £80) a good companion for music storage and light game play in those quiet moments when you have stuff to get on with [Better than watching the Disney c**p etc on TV...IMHO].
So long as you know what's been downloaded and have some protection & controls in place.
It has a non usb charge socket, which is a pain if you're in the car, but does support USB OTG, which surprised me.
Saw the Archos Titanium 80 in a shop the other week @ £120 ish and was impressed with the feel and operation of it; looking quickly it seems to have had good write ups for the price.
Limited experience other than that; I know my friend loved his original Nexus 7 until it threw a full wobbly the other week after the update that should have made it an even better bet :wallbash:

I would have thought you'd want to get something you can get a decent case for, surely if it's just for an 8 year old then the specs don't matter THAT much?

Something that can take a knock or two I would have thought would have been higher up on the priority list.

A nexus 7 of any gen is a good choice imo. Android 4.3 also has restricted profiles if you to control what he sees.

    EDIT: 4000 posts

The Nexus 7 looks like a winner TBH.

A good call on the case George, he's pretty kind to tablets - much more so than laptops, strangely - but I'll have a look at cases once we decide. There's time yet for him to change his mind completely, and go for a spongebob aquarium or something.

Even if he's kind, a child of that age is probably more likely to accidentally drop/knock it than someone older (I would have thought), so if he's going to get something so fragile (relative to what I had when I was his age, LEGO is tough stuff :D), it's probably worth being safe rather than sorry :)

Don't toysrus do a tablet that is based on andriod that is basically child proof.

Seen kids as young as 3-5 have iPads in my street crazy really. Nexus 7 is decent value but over budget unless your buying second hand.

Asus memo pad 7 hd is £99 and is a nice piece of kit. The nook hd similar cash, kindle fire. 3 best inside the actual budget when brought new.

I'd also be buying a heavy duty case if buying for small children. Tablets are easy to drop and the slick surfaces most companies use are not child friendly.

I would also not be looking bigger than an 8 inch total size area as that's a big device in small hands.

No disrespect meant and not questioning your parenting skills, i would agree with one that can take a bit of a knock though, my mrs is nearly 26 and she drops stuff all the time.

    Meh, fine.

Get a Nexus 7(Gen 1), it's got a better re-sale value for when the fad wears off.

Big question. What is it going to be used for? Web browsing and basic non intensive gaming? Something cheap and cheerful it doesn't matter, my niece has a made in China (nothing) special and it is fine for her needs.
If your lad is into games or needs anything more intense I would say nook, or nexus.
I had an Archos 80 cobalt, it has a digitiser issue. Archos refuse to honour the warranty (even though I registered it the day I got it) as it was a gift and i don't have proof of purchase. If you do get the Archos make sure you keep that receipt safe, also they are not very good at updates. In 8 months there was one to fix the audio issue. Most Archos tabs are still at 4.1 that said until it broke it was adequate for what was paid for it.
