I've been asked by a good friend of mine (no not the one who wants the blue lights on the pc) a tablet, now he just wants it just to read books, nothing else just books. So i thought an e book reader would suffice but he wants a big screen bigger then 7" as I showed him by blackberry playbook, he said he didn't want an ebook reader because he wants a nice colourful screen, some of his books are in arabic and he's wondering if it would be able to read them. Also he says he wants to stick his flash drive into the tablet as he's got books on it, they are pdf's, ive never seen a tablet with a usb port. So i'm unsure what to suggest, I showed him tablets but remain undecided. Apologies about spamming the forum with my help threads, but this one is rather urgent actually he wants it now as the kids seem to have destroyed his last tablet, not sure what his last tablet was but im sure he mentioned it was 7" and he wants it bigger.
Kindle Fire HD maybe suitable enough, Should be able to read .pdf's as the Android App will display them ok. No Tablet that i know off has a full size USB port, only one that i know off that has an accessory for one is the Sony Experia Z, but i would say, copy/paste the books from the flash drive onto the Tablet via a Laptop, job done. Sam
Some of the cheapy ebay special tablets have a USB port that can host I think. Also, the Asus Transformers have them, or atleast, the TF300 does. I really don't think a 10" is a good idea for reading, a 7" is hard enough to hold for long periods, one handed.
thanks i'll suggest the kindle fire hd, only thing is he wanted one for £120 but he said he'll up his budget a little like £130 and maybe a little more as i told him that all the bigger tablets are expensive.
is this any good? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-S600...&qid=1392073716&sr=8-1&keywords=lenovo+tablet
If you are targeting such specs, then might as well look into Dell Venue Pro 7. It runs Full Windows 8.1, powered by an Atom processor. He can read his books. There is a kindle app in the Windows 8 App store. He can install his web browser and surf the web with Flash enabled, play music, and well do any basic office work. Downsides: -> No standard size USB port due to the size of the device. It has Micro-USB 2.0, so he can get a small adapter for that. -> The digitize pen sucks. Don't bother getting it. It randomly clicks everywhere when close to the screen. (It's no Wacom or N-Trig, that is why) Option B: Dell Venue 11 Pro. Full size USB on this one, 11inch, available with Atom Core i3 or i5 (but the i5 is not worth the price. You can get the surface Pro 2 for the same price with a faster CPU and better machine overall.) It does have an 1080p IPS screen. and well a pretty neat machine.
Yes it is over budget, its not the specs im looking fdor, its the screen size he's after since its just for reading pdf files nothing else
The full size USB seems to be the missing feature for most of the options available. I would have thought the NookHD+ would have been ideal except for the micro-usb port.
Surface RT and Surface 2 iirc both have a full sized USB port. But I got to ask, why do the books have to be on a flash drive? I mean can't they just load them via cable from a PC onto the tablet and then just read them off there? Books generally aren't big, unless it's like manga/comics where each page is a picture, though this is coming from someone who uses epubs.
My friend is less has little knowledge with the tablets, i've told him a few times that to just stick the flash drive in the pc then to the tablet, if we leave out the full usb whats the best thing we can do for around £120 dont worry about going a little over what about the crap brand tablets, as they should atleast be fine for reading? since thats all he wants it for as ive seen on 10" for cheaper than all the ones ive been looking at bvut im sure its so cheap for a reason such as it being crap
Nook had some going cheap a while back. Not sure if they still are or not. Or Hudl? Can't remember the size though.
Google tablets (and, I'm guessing other tablets with a micro-USB charging input) can use an OTG cable and an app like Stickmount allow you to plug standard USB storage thumbsticks, card readers etc. into your tablet to access books, pics etc. stored on other devices. Nook do a 7" (Nook HD) for about £80 and a 10" (Nook HD+) for about £120. They don't have a standard micro-USB slot, so you can 't use OTG but they do have a microSD slot for extra storage options. The standard Nook-branded Android is a bit crap, but it's really easy to stick something like Cyanogenmod 10.2 on them. I also find a matte screen protector really helps with the readability of a tablet, as it cuts down a lot of the glare from the glossy screen.
Not all tabs support otg (apparently Asus memo doesn't) Personally I'd stick to a nexus. I did look at a nook myself, but decided that the nexus was a better option even though the full hd screen on the nook was nice. Given the ability to chuck stuff up to Google drive and services like Dropbox, box and others I'd question storage requirements. Personally I'd avoid cheap unless there is no other option.
