Looks like your typical inflammatory Fox "News" story to me. A group of religious academics meet and discuss some ideas, and the next thing you know they're plotting to steal our time system! There's no chance of it happening in any non-muslim country and everyone knows it.

    Agreed with the above.

What these clerics propose is no less arbitrary than time zones based on GMT. Since plenty of cultures are currently happily running their own calendar alongside our standard mainstream one, I do not see any problem with a Muslim group using their own time system. The likelihood of this taking over the current GMT system is as likely as the Pope converting to Islam.

But everybody goes: OMG! Its those scary Muslims out for world domination again! Ban religion! Religion is the root of all evil!!! You're being played. By Fox News, how embarrassing. :p

Who grabbed the story from the BBC, our supposed centre of journalistic integrity, and unbiased reporting. BBC really are going down hill.

I'm quite interested in what the longitude aligned to magnetic north thing means, I thought magnetic north was the one that moved about. Also, what other cities lie along that particular line of 'perfect alignment'?

I really don't care who proposed making the time zone change. Just the sheer enormity of making such a change now. It's bad enough with the freaking daylight savings time stuff. But yes, Fox is known for being a little over dramatic in "news" having a more Bush administration agenda.

It wouldn't result in different times. In England we'd still get up at 8 and sleep at 12 or whatever, it would make zero difference to our lives. But spare a thought for those who would swap sides of the international date line, they'd lose a whole day of their lives. ZOMG muslims steeling time!

Obviously it's a ridiculous idea, mind, why change that just for the sake of changing it? But then again, like many have said I don't think this was a serious suggestion that the whole world should adopt this. If it is, then it's clearly ill thought-out and I'm not convinced these scientists speak for the entire muslim community anyway... I can't really see why Mecca is a better place for the line though. Besides, we invented it so I think that means we get to keep it? As it stands, the international date line is pretty much in middle of the pacific so there's very few people there to disrupt. Whereas with Mecca as the centre, the line would (by my calculations) go through Alaska meaning it'd be on a different day to the rest of the USA. I think Fox news should have gone with that angle ;)

Aren't they just. I lost most respect for the BBC when under government pressure they got rid of Greg Dyke (after the Hutton enquiry).

they can have what they want as far as I'm concerned. as long as we keep GMT and BST the same. i.e. the time in GREENWICH and BRITISH SUMMER.

OMG Americans drink tea? i thought only British people did it!! :hehe:

on the subject: our clocks would not change, the hours would not change, the only thing that would change is the reference relative to the centre, i am at GMT, if this changing of time zones happened my clocks would still be correct, but i would be in MT-5.

i would get my knickers in a twist if they wanted to change our international standards.

So, does this mean shorter hours of work for the same pay?

If so, I'm all over it.

This is hardly what i call taking the piss,

yes they want mecca as a centre for the worlds timezones, can everyone get what they want.
    no.

    why?

because if everyone got every stupid little idea satisfied i would have my bridge to the moon, and everyone elses ridiculous ideas would also be gratified. 100 years ago we would have hung a few people for being this stupid, as we can't we have to do the next best thing. ignore them and carry on exporting our beliefs to their children and eventually the middle east will turn into birmingham, a lovely vibrantly coloured place with a lot of curry resturants, everyone speaking english.

I second your motion and additionally vote for you to be president.

The BBC's news reporting ability has been suspect for years, only very few people seem to stand back and question it. A recent example, the floods last year, where reporters were standing on the banks of the Thames telling people that Abingdon had been flooded.

I grew up in Abingdon. The reporters were standing on the opposite side of the river to the town on a natural flood plain, which, floods at least once a year anyway. The only buildings there iir, belong to the rugby club, the rest of it is grassland. The town itself was fine.

lol, i'm a mormon and that made me laugh. quite a few of my friends are leaving on missions to go do this. one's in australia, one's going to madagascar and another is going to hawaii

but changing the worlds time zones just to make a religious group happy shouldn't happen. people of any religion, race or gender need to realise there are other people in the world too

if the city is the center of the earth, shouldn't it be at the center of the earth.
magnetic north moves. it doesn't stay in the same place.

if it points at mecca, and mecca is the center of the earth, shouldn't it just point down?
