I do plan on purchasing 64bit Vista later on this year, 8800GTS has to come first though Yeha I have run Vista a few times but always gone back to XP for the performance but figured that with my signficant performance boost now, I should be happier, and I am, now posting from Vista Ultimate 32bit SP1.
My Vista has given me no hassles my COD 4 runs hassle free and so far everything has gone very smooth I have been using it for about 10 weeks and feel very at home with it and even the security prompts dont really bother me now (i think you get used to them) I have XP on my other home pc and at work but much prefer Vista to XP now I got used to it Nigel
Ignoring everything else in the thread, the title of the thread tells me that you don't want to go with Vista. So don't.
Don't talk bollocks, all you did was disable UAC while installing applications because it popped up too many times and then assume it must be like that all the time. I run UAC and I have not seen a prompt for about a week, it essentially only pops up when changing some setting somewhere.
Vista is great, ive noticed very few bugs, its blue screened on me once, sp1 is going to be out fairly soon. Upgrade now. Like what people say, vista is slower than XP - thats because it has lots of new features. You dont see the same people using windows 98 because its faster than XP do you? no, there are more features in XP, it makes it slower than 98, but not better. Vista may be slightly slower, but its better. edit: oh, and disabling UAC is the best thing you can possibly do in vista edit2: PROUDLY running vista home premium
I disable UAC, I know what sites I visit and I just don't get problems So far soo good on Vista though installing games today
Vista is very nice, but it has it's downsides. I run a dual boot with XP and I find myself using XP most of the time. The main thing that annoys me is the constant HDD activity. Hopefully this will be fixed with SP1. It is also pretty slow compared to XP. Annoyingly so. The best thing IMO about Vista is the start menu. And the glass interface is lush. But if you really want convincing.... Don't get Vista or I'll be round to smash your teeth in jk
I've just installed vista on one of my pc's and i don't really see what everyone has been complaining about it for, i've read in so many places that vista is crap, but i really like it. I think its a big improvement on XP, go for it!
I dont get this. I only got it during the first couple of weeks after installation while it was doing search indexing. It still indexes every so often, but I wouldn't say its constant. And it makes the search much faster. I don't understand all the Vista hate on the internet. It doesn't seem too bad here, but other places I've seen most people complain about it all the time. My experience with it has been a lot better than XP, and the installation was far easier. It came with my network driver, which XP didn't have, so I didn't have to download it on another machine. And the photo gallery is ace.
People around here tend to know what they are doing, and have actually used vista. I know quite a few people that have never or barely tested vista, and claim that it's crap because they have heard that from others. A well known IT website here in Norway (ITavisen.no) seem to use every opportunity to bash microsoft and talk warmly about apple. Many people seem to take their opinions from their articles. It's quite annoying, actually.
I really hate Vista, not for its bugs, but just because it's not my taste. Vista on the laptop and XP on my PC, XP anyday thanks.
So you want something bad about Vista... ok... Well it is a resource hog! It's awful, you need a monster CPU, LOT of RAM, and a super ultra powerful video card!!!!! you need 256MB of RAM JUST to start it else it won't boot (tested myself under Virtual PC)! I can tell you right now that your 486 with 2Mb of Ram is no match for Vista. And the CPU will spike 100% and take forever to load on it. Windows 3.1, what was wrong with that OS! Notepad runs just fine for your texts and University papers, you have Netscape Navigator witch is great also. Windows Clock is a very fun game too and better graphics...way better than Crysis! [/sarcastic]
I'm also thinking of taking the plunge but I'm unsure what I should get. I was originally thinking 32-bit as it seems to be better for drivers and software, I often see a lot of programs around the web that aren't compatible with x64. Also, which edition? I'm running XP Pro right now, and their comparison chart was so vague that it was about as useful as a gone-off salmon. Will Premium do or are some of the features in Ultimate useful? It all depends on what I need it to do really, from the seems of it, Ultimate is the equivalent of XP Pro and MCE stuck together, AFAIK the connection sharing feature I use with my 360 isn't available on XP Home, so would I need Vista Ultimate? Thanks for any help, sorry for the thread hi-jack.
Question: Can you turn off search? The only time I ever use search on my computer is when I'm manually installing something and it needs a .dll which has been stuck in some obscure place. It's a sort of a moot point, since I went to the dark side to avoid Vista (lovin the penguin, baby!), but I guess I'm wondering if it's possible to turn off all of Vista's "features" to make it just a more expensive version of XP?
Go to any drive's properties and uncheck "Index this drive for faster searching", or simply disable the "Windows Search" service.
