http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1815845,00.html I'm not sure what's worse, the fact that those girls decided to get pregnant or the fact the school has an on-site nursery and stuff to support "mothers." To me, the latter would actually encourage them to have kids.
I remember reading that last year alright. Does having a nursery encourage that? No. No more then having a gun in the house encourages you to go out and kill people. The parents are not always to blame, but in a case like this I am wondering what the hell they were brought up like to make such a monumentally idiotic choice like that. The doctors who were giving out birth control pills were in the right. If teens are going to have sex (and they will) better safe then sorry, and if not safe (no condoms with the pills?) at least not pregnant. The 18 year old mentioned in the article had it right, they are looking for unconditional love. Well guess what? Your kids don't always give you that as they grow up. Seriously though, it's a facepalm even re-reading it. Stupid, stupid kids......
I think it's more a consequence of actions. This has probably happened many times before, albeit on a singular basis because of the social institution. That's kind of like people claiming condom education is encouragement to have sex. Absolutely. I bet it's the "cute baby" syndrome.
It sucks, and Rkiver is right on the money when he says it is about unconditional love. It is also about self-esteem: doing the only thing they feel they are any good at. Let's face it: these are not girls raised with aspirations to become successful career women (and even in those circles the societal pressures to do the womanly thing and have babies is enormous. They're just expected to do it as well as holding down a career). But what is the alternative to supporting them? The babies are coming anyway and the way society dealt with young unmarried mothers until the sixties was, frankly, Taliban-esque. The young mothers were put in workhouses where they were starved and beaten by self-righteous, sexually and emotionally frustrated nuns, while those babies that were not whisked away for immediate adoption by "decent" families (sometimes for a given value of "decent") were put in orphanages and starved and beaten by self-righteous, sexually and emotionally frustrated nuns. I see a theme here. No thanks. I've dealt with the scars when I was working in mental health. Nurseries in school may seem like colluding with the problem, but at least the mother has an opportunity to grow up, see the error of her ways and still make something of herself while being a good parent to her child. It is said that it takes a village to raise a child. We are the village.
Collection of idiots. "Then the story got worse. "We found out one of the fathers is a 24-year-old homeless guy," the principal says, shaking his head." I lol'd so hard. I probably shouldn't have, but oh lord did I find that funny.
Nexxo I agree with everything you said right up until the last line and the only reason that I disagree with that is the fact that you don't seem to have taken into consideration that every village also has a village idiot. it just seems like Gloucester has more than its fair share and no i'm not talking about the girls I'm talking about everyone who helped elect their mayor.
I feel sorry for the babies. The sort of person who decides to make a pact like this obviously lacks good judgment, and would most likely not be a great parent.
Britains guide to successful young parenting: if at first you dont succeed in communicating with your child, shout louder and use obsenities. personally as for the article id falcon punch the lot of them.
Chav nation, No more 'Sir can i go to the toilet' its 'Sir,can i change little Damian's nappy' only to be followed by a sexual harassment on poor 'Sir' because he happened to be in the room when little Damian was being breast feed, and the only reason 'Sir' was there was because he was teaching math to the rest of the class.
God that sends shivers down me everytime I see it, poor kids. Personally a little tap on the bottom is way better than teaching your 4 year old every swear word you know.
Me too, my 3.5 year old cousin knows the f-word, it's really sad because his mother uses it in front of him
Most selfish decision ever... your totally right capn Pedro, I mean... if their looking for unconditional love from the baby (let's ignore the idiocy in that sentence for 1 minute), then how much will their baby love then when they realize their mother had them for self benefit... they won't be happy at all, they aren't thinking about the child one bit, and then their is council housing... I smell it, it's there, young mother + baby = free council housing...
my opinion on nurserys in schools is a good idea i wish we had that here. i know that woulds help me and my gf out alot, because were tryin to have kids but she is still at school so a nursery there would help so she isn't far from the baby. and does anyone know how many teenage couple get pregnant cause as far as i know its alot...
Perhaps you shouldn't be trying for a baby while she is still at school? Priorities, dude. Without educational qualifications no income security. Without income security no secure standards of living to raise a child in.
