Well in the articles and stuff only - I could put up with them - if it will really help you. But I will never click on them and I get annoyed when the hovering box turns up. But they are not too difficult. But never in the forums. I'll just leave the forums without a backward glance if they start turning up in them.
As one of those annoying people who highlights text on and off as I'm reading it, these things really annoy me. I'd much rather have ads. I might have to go back to Opera if that blocks them
Anything is better then those Macromedia Flash ads some websites are using. You know the ones that dance across your screen when your in the middle of reading something and they have the close box in some obscure area of the ad. So f*n annoying. I remember I was at this one site once where they had this banner add that had like 4 cell phones and 4 pagers ringing at the same time. It would not stop until you clicked the ad or refreshed the page. Normally Im not a violent person but seriously I wanted to punch someone in the head after that. I dont remember what site it was because I never gone back. If there is no stupid bells and sounds and its not right up in my face when im trying to do something then all is good.
I also just recently noticed them on other sites. Really annoying at first, but I'm used to them now - much better than the alternatives. Bold, underlined text is reasonable.
I really don't like them, but I could cope with them on the main site. I do also click the google ads occasionally, and sometimes even look at the site it went to. PS: they do.
I hate most ad's fullstop. Although yesterday a ad made me buy a linux shell. Was very cheap and didnt find it without the ad. That was a text ad tho. Most ad's are banned for me. I have a firefox plugin and it bans advert images etc, so its just blank. And pop's are long gone. What annoy me know is gamespy, even know they suck anyway, is when they bring up a MASSIVE ad, and you HAVE! to wacth it to go though to the site. - Sc0rian
I like the way (to date) 19 people have said they'd leave bit if these ads were put in place, yet none of them have come forward to state why.
Firefox is too slow. IE loads pages and images a hell of a lot faster. Startup time for IE is quicker too. And no pages have problems displaying on IE, whereas some do have problems with FireFox and related.
Because they are too bloody annoying. I dont like things flashing/highlighted/coloured/emphasised in the middle of an article I am trying to read. The google ads in an unobtrusive place like they are placed currently are fine. Even an unobtrusive banner at the top or bottom of the page are fine. But as soon as these things start popping up in the middle, I am outta there. The reviews BiT does might come out a few days earlier, and might be slightly better written. But if you know what you want, its not like the info is not available elsewhere. I dont buy stuff as soon as they come out anyway. So I can just read reviews that come up somewhere else and I will be happy. Obviously I prefer Bit, but I am not putting up with any ****. Therefore, I would leave.
Meh, there damn annoying to be fair, I wouldn't leave, but I always get suckered into clicking one thinking its a link to another article related to the word or something, instead of some stupid ad. Even if you did do it, CERTAINLY keep it out of the forums (and columns) but if they started to annoy me I would stop reading the articles. Why not have it that members don't see it, and just guests do, as guests must make up like 80% (random guess) of the people that read the articles? Then there will be an incentive for more people to join, which means more people might move onto the forums too! And there will always be a supply of guests to the site, and by keeping membership free you would increase your members database etc? - M@
I chose HATE THEM, but I wouldn't actually leave bit-tech. If there was an option for that I would've selected it. It was just the closest option to how I feel about them. I already block all of the adverts bit-tech carries, and if you did add Vibrant Media's text ads, they're already blocked so I'd probably not even realise you'd added them. I can't honestly remember the last time I clicked on a banner or text ad on purpose.
Wouldn't change my reading habits. It's have to be a whole lot worse than that to stop me reading Bit-Tech .
i HATE those ads. they annoy the crap outta' me. it would probably be ok on the main page or articles, but definately nothing like it on the forums. Tbh i don't mind the VIA ad in the top right, and i hardly even notice the google one since its at the bottom of the page
Just to add my opinion here - i hate them with a passion. My reason for this is that they're misleading and are almost a way of tricking people into clicking links. It also makes it hard to then work out what is a "proper" link and what is not. Everyone knows what a banner is and so it's a fair bet that any clicks on banners will be because the user wanted to click on the banner. Text ads are on the other hand much more misleading, annoying, and are verging on the point of being a scam/con.
Then your firefox install is corrupt. Either that or you've installed an extension that actually blocks you viewing sites that have ads (which would be one helluva stupid extension) There are many firefox users on the forums who can view the site perfectly. Some of us without ads via the 'Adblock' extension, some with ads.
