AOL UK think I'm a mug - WRONG! My mum bought a GFX card last night. She wanted to check the status of the order (They still hadn't processed it). So, I checked for her today. Guess what - "CANNOT FIND SERVER". Funny, though, that my friends on other dialup ISP's can access with no problems. I'm getting sick and tired of the constant rigmaroles with AOL. The software is buggy and cumbersome, The connection is poor all the time, The email service is s***e and just about every message board and chat room is full of people who speak like "my m8 iz dat cool, he got g's" Not only that, they've increased the monthly charge to £16. If I had the chance to change my line to BT... *dreams* (BT Quoted £100 just to change this phone line to a BT line instead of NTL)
dude im not in the uk but isnt there some sort of broad band service that is $20-$30 i think its time for you to update
I don't know about AOL UK but at home when I use the AOL account, I just connect to the internet with AOL, then I open up IE to do my browsing since the AOL browser is crap.
Ahh yes AOL, nothing but a bad memory, ws with them for 12 months and then went on to Pipex broadband. But I do know how you feel about the software, I always hated having it on my computer, made it so darned slow!!
I installed AOL 7 on my laptop and leached off my brothers account, AOL 7 made startup soooo slow... It was horrible, it would take the computer about 6 minutes to load AOL. So methinks I can't live with this no more so I go and un-install. Guess what? Every time I tried to uninstall It would lock and refuse to uninstall... RANT RANT RANT... in the end I got so desperate I formatted the pc and now it's nice and good and AOL free ant takes a matter of seconds to bring on the desktop... aaaah
AOL was great for me when I used to use it until I switched to fast24 a few months ago. It was nice and fast, connected first time, and didn't disconnect much. I got around their software by running it on a redundant machine, and sharing the connection using wingate. I had to run my own SMTP server though so I didn't have to use their email service.
My sister is using AOL (and I'm mooching) and I can't believe how easy it is! (just like the commercial says!) The commercial thinks it is very easy, yet, in reality, it is much harder than regular internet access!!! Why open AOL, view the ads, let it load EVERYTHING you don't need, THEN open a browser, when you can just "click the little e" and let it auto-connect? (for the people who don't want control, and just want ease-of-use) AOL has nothing over normal ISPs anymore. (I admit that AOL for windows 3.1 was easier than installing all the neccessary drivers and software to get online, but who uses 3.1 anymore? we've got far less OSs to choose from now!) I've got other AOL horror stories from workers (pertaining to the health concerns, or lack there of, of their employees), but that's another rant.. <BOOT> AOL </BOOT> ^(simpson-esqe australian booting)
AOL are just a joke really. When will they stop treating us all like n00bs? Even the real n00bs are patronised and know when they are getting a raw deal. AOL need to wise up and start putting out a good service.
Fortunately I have never had to deal with AOL, but Mega, If its all you have available, just appreciate the fact that you *do* have internet. Did you get your mate to do a DNS lookup and try to connect to the website via the IP?
ive never had the privilege of AOL, but ive also tried hard to stay clear of them as much as possible, as i dont hear anythin good about them...
AOHELL is nasteh when i first got the net at home it was on AOHELL, rents not really knowing what to get... managed to rack up a large over usage type thing in the first month ... switched to btinternet pretty damn quick incidently their software = useless w00t 14.4k speed back in those days
