Nah. Gridfinity and, crucially, downsizing is where you go after you've had enough of jiggling drawers.
Shelving, you say…? Hmmm… I’m well aware that this is a “me problem” . I need places for things to go in order to stop stuff cluttering up, but even when I have specific places the things pile up anyway as and when I use them, because putting them back in their proper place signifies that “I am done with that thing for now”, and nine times out of ten I am nowhere near done with the thing, because I’ve always got at least half a dozen projects on the go at once . I acknowledge that I need a cleanup in here. For example, I dumped the drawers from my old desk on the shelving unit a while back and never got around to sorting out their contents. But I’ve beat myself up for decades about “things being in a mess all the time”, and it’s only comparatively recently I learned this is a byproduct of a neurodevelopmental disorder (ADHD). So I’m not going to let stuff get out of control, and I won’t let stuff get dirty, but I’m not gonna keep beating myself up for something that I don’t always have that much control over. Life’s too goddamn short to keep putting that kind of stress on myself constantly.
Stage 1: boxes 2: shelves for boxes 3: stuffing stuff between boxes 4: putting stuff on all flat surfaces 5: shelves for boxes on all flat surfaces 6: hanging stuff on the edges of the shelves and packing stuff under the shelves ... I'm at the stage where you start hanging stuff from the ceiling like onions in a Frenchman's cellar. I FINALLY took enough time off yesterday to get the printer set up. I also managed to crash it after a successful first print. I somehow made the printer go into homing mode with the print still in place. It was at that moment I realized there is no 'cancel' or E-stop on this thing. It will also just grind the belt forever if a bit of plastic is between it and the plate. I'm loving it already, though. I think the people saying it is loud don't have milling setups.
I'm getting through a lot of filament... Now I feel compelled to build a 3D Scanner and learn CAD, so I can start making custom inserts for storage boxes.
Thjis is the way, ot just cut around them directly! I've been professionally doing CAD a long time and that would get tedious fast, there's way more fun thiungs to design!
Just scored a big win. My missus, who is invariably unthrilled with my tech obsession, just showed a chink in her anti-3D printer armour: "Daaaaave, you know my jewellery cabinet... is it possible to use you printer to make compartments for the different drawers...?" "Of course it is, love. All you have to do is admit you were wrong about my new printer"
Yeah, his channel is barely a month old and his hit rate is high. I've see his latest video, but I haven't had my printer running today. I will be having a look at his gcode mod though. Check out this video for some solid CC knowledge too:
@IanW - I skipped some stuff like, storing stuff in stored appliances, turning the garage attic into a trim board lumber yard, protecting the spare glassworks and light fixtures by putting them in the main attic... Stuff that only applies to me, generally. The work desk now has low boxes on it with offcuts of granite on top to make extra storage underneath. I can print tool racks that mount on the sides of my tool racks...
Just learned of something useful for those of us with long PTFE tubes to load filament through:- Files at:- https://www.printables.com/model/1219294-bowden-speed-loader-for-prusa-xl-and-core-one-and
