Total bellend, I know. I actually finished it a couple of weeks ago. I haven’t got around to putting up anything about it because I still haven’t sorted my image hosting… And I haven’t got image hosting sorted because I haven’t really had much of a chance to properly set up all the systems that’ll populate the new rack. I’ve been holding off on doing too much more with my self-hosting setup - like adding new services such as image hosting(!) - because I want to change my deployment & orchestration workflow, and the perfect time to do that kind of overhaul is when you’re migrating hosts… I haven’t really got round to doing any serious self-hosted overhauling because other projects keep getting in the way… And Baldur’s Gate 3 keeps getting in the way of those other projects… It’s a wonderfully circuitous spiral of procrastination . Made a new “lamp” this week though - although it’s really more of a decorative thing than anything that’ll actually properly illuminate anything: It’s a Minecraft ore block that’s lit up with an RGB LED ring (a NeoPixel clone), powered by an ESP32 microcontroller running WLED The outer faces have voids, but you fit a diffuser inside them so it only illuminates those voids. I did try the diffuser in a translucent PLA, but plain white gives a better effect. It’s kinda neat. I’m not too sure it’s happy about running from 3x Eneloop rechargeable AAs instead of hard-wired USB power - the dev board has a voltage regulator on its 5v input, so it’s technically possible to feed it less than 5v and still have it work properly, but rechargeable AAs have a lower nominal voltage than non-rechargeables, so that could be causing issues. But it’s neat nonetheless.
Just scored a box of Elegoo PLA refills dirt cheap. Now I need to print some reusable spools. There are a few designs out there, but does anyone here use refills and have a preferred printable design? [edit] Found one. Link
TIL - Prusa now make filament in Noctua's brand colours, if anyone wants to print matching fan shrouds etc. Source - https://www.techpowerup.com/343908/...printing-filaments-in-signature-noctua-colors
Yeah I’ve seen the refill spools before, they do often come out cheaper. It’s tempting, but I’d want a filament winder first, because getting filament onto a reel by hand and have it be tangle-free sounds like a total ballache. I also still need to build some kind of rewind mechanism for the “cereal box” dry boxes I currently use. Those boxes are finicky enough as it is: if you fully fit the bearings into the housing, there’s a chance that they’ll come into contact with the box and impede the movement of the roller, leading to under-extrusions or tripping the printer’s tangle sensor. It could be solved relatively easily by adding a flat plate to the “outside” of the bearing housing and slightly reducing the length of the roller to accommodate the shorter distance between bearings. But I don’t trust my CAD skills enough to try and do that competently. Plus, if I build some kind of rewind mechanism then I’d have to change things anyway, since the point of rotation would have to be the centre of the reel instead of sitting the reel on rollers.
It's very straightforward - you leave the tape on the refill, fit the spool then pull the tape off. Zero hassle. I'll certainly be looking for refill options when purchasing filament in the future. Might be a while though - I currently have a dozen part used spools in the dry box, four more in the S4 and at least a dozen unopened spools, with some more still on order. (if any of you had my wife's contact details, I could get into a LOT of trouble)
PMMA filament is available - from what I've seen, it's not that hard to print with (similar to ABS & ASA) and it's apparently easy to get clear prints. I think the biggest downside would be the smell - you'd definitely want some way of venting your printer to the outside.
I'm kinda familiar with the stink part. My sense of smell is totally shot at this point. Now that you mention it, I'm having trouble with venting because the wind is often strong enough to backflow my fan. They keep making colors like the Noctua sh*t, but there's barely any options for translucent colors.
Looks like the camera has died on my Elegoo CC. Not a major issue - just a wee bit annoying. Raised a ticket with support.
-Have you ever slapped together a basic case for very specific hardware, only to find the hardware is probably gonna die soon? -I kinda slopped it together with PVC glue, using the big swab on the lid, in the dark, in weather too cold for the glue to set quickly...
Today, Prusa open-sourced the CAD files for their CORE-One & CORE-One L printer frames https://blog.prusa3d.com/core-one-cad-files-release-under-the-new-open-community-license-ocl_127290/ EDIT:- The files are on Printables here:- Core One Core One L
Been through the diagnostics with Elegoo support - New camera on the way, assuming they have stock. Actually, I recall seeing a few posts of folk swapping out the camera for a 1080p unit... that sounds like something I might have a look at. Also, currently printing this: I know the Elegoo logo is backwards but a power switch at the front!!!! There's another one incorporating the wifi antenna too.
Um, watcha mean funny? I wanted to try out the open firmware, given they've supposedly worked out the kinks in the 1.1.40 firmware it is based upon. I have found a bug already mind you - it keeps dropping the nozzle & and bed temps to 210 and 60 degrees when I set a PETG print running (regardless of my filament settings in the slicer) and I have to change it manually on the printer.
