It's just like any other business, really. The military is suffering from a shortage of recruits, so they put an ad in a place that is likely to get noticed. If you have people fully engaged in shoot-em-ups or tactical strategy games, then you've already found your target demographic.
It's no different than if Nike were to adverstise in a (American) football game.

I even heard that RL doesn't have any respawns. What's up with that?
On the plus side the force-feedback in perfect.
Not to mention the surround-sound.
