Renault team is a Renault engine pushed into a car designed for Mercedes engine, with no work on the car this season at all; it is a lost season, Renault is already developing the 2017 car for some time now.
There wasn't much work done on it last year either, so it's a Renault engine in a [essentially] 2 year old car designed for a different PU, having taken over a team with no money. If anything it's a miracle they're not even further back. As you say, Renault probably wrote this season off as a non-starter before the ink died on the paperwork.
Only 10 cars finished the GP2 feature race, I lost count of how many safety cars there were. 3 abreast along the main straight, incidents up and down the field, it was cracking stuff.
... followed by C4 immediately trying to make excuses on his behalf. "Oh the sun was in his eyes for a bit there!" As if the other 8 drivers (that had been out until that point, VES was still garaged) were running the circuit in the opposite direction. Is Sky as bad? I miss the old BBC team, they had the least amount of Hamilton fanboy-ism for a Brit commentary crew.
Safety car (restarts) is the most unsafe thing in Baku, and i think everyone will agree with me who watched today's GP2 race. On one of the restarts the leader had to brake because he did catch up to the safety car before the safety car lane. On another restarts the leader left enough space behind, waited until the safety car lane to accelerate - and boom, mass crash. Sure, it is also about inexperience of GP2 drivers, but still. I expect similar things to happen even at F1 race.
It was refreshingly honest IMO - "I just wasn't on it", "I had great rhythm yesterday, but none today". If GP2 is any indication, this could be a very eventful race.
+1 glad im not the only one to feel it was a little bit of a snoozefest i blame poor track design. While it looks great on paper and has pretty scenic photo ops, the only real place we saw much overtaking was down into turn one, and i hate those overtakes as it boils down to Approach car press DRS button overtake car Done then the overtaking driver gets the advantage of DRS across the next straight ( because reasons ) and thus there is little chance you can fight back Also another convenient mechanical issue for Hamilton...
zzzzzz..... Nico winzzzzz..... Can't fault Nico's driving, but it wasn't great for the spectacle. Same goes for the rest of the grid, even Haryanto, Palmer and Ericsson are clearly a cut above ninety percent of the GP2 field, but their skill and professionalism doesn't always make for the most excitement.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/motorsport/36570935 On a different note. Engine failure from the lead at 23:55 on the clock for Toyota. Gutted.
Was gutted for Toyota, losing the lead on the last lap like that. Bet the GTE Pro teams are ruing letting the Ford GTs enter on a waiver too.
Yep, I couldn't agree with me more there. Despite EJ waxing lyrical about the great spectacle, it was a pretty dull affair. Also:
I struggled to stay awake for large parts of the race. Not a sniff of action outside the pit straight, the only drama being Hamilton's hissy fit with his engine problems. Don't know why he didn't come into the pit and let someone from the team make the necessary changes to the settings.
