Mercedes to build hypercar with F1 engine. Looks set to go head to head (or rather wheel to wheel) with the Aston Martin-Red Bull. Also not sure what's going on at evo: "And, of course, this hypercar will require a cooling system – something F1 cars famously do without.". Apart from a big radiator in each sidepod you mean...
I would give him the benefit of the doubt and say he meant an active cooling system (since F1 cars are only allowed air flow over the radiators, no fans)... except he says it's Mercedes first hyper car. What about the Mercedes Mclaren SLR, the CLK GTR, CLK LM and Pagani Zonda? The guy is apparently not into cars.
Got to love the French (and Williams). Didn't Ford/Benetton/Cosworth make a Transit hyper car out on an old Group C car and a Cosworth F1 engine too?
I'd hardly call the slr a hyper car, I'd be hard pushed to even put it into supercar territory even, it's more a suped up gt like a Bentley continental, only a little more mental. The CLK's were merely homologation specials with barely a thought cast to using them on the road and the Zonda is a Pagani, Merc only provided the engine, much like the maclaren F1. So this would be their first hypercar.
Finally confirmation of what everyone already knew was coming. Wonder when we'll find out who's taking his seat? Probably not till the end of the month when maclaren sort their lineup out, if they have an interest in button anyway. Or maybe a risk on rejuvenating kvyat?
Rumours that Button will retire but I would love for him to have another season. I can honestly see Williams take a young driver like Lynn and keep Bottas for a season. If Bottas moves on then they'll plump for Button or possibly a driver recently outted like Sutil or more likely di Resta
I don't rate Bottas that much, he lacks race craft and hasn't really proven himself to be a top flight driver, even when Williams had a good car back in 14/15. I certainly feel for Massa, he's F1's nearly kid, he could keep Schuey honest back in his day. I hope Jenson gets another drive next year, given the last couple of painful years in a noncompetitive McLaren, especially given the changes coming for next year.
Id imagine McLaren will take the option on Stofflecake. Williams wouldn't be a bad option for him a lot of the bigger seats are already confirmed anyway. Its that or he goes off an does WEC or some crazy Triathlon thing.
Button should retire unless he can get a championship material car, which lets be blunt the Williams won't be. Bottas since the Ferrari rumours has gone down hill. Most top teams who looked at him probably noticed that as well and have put him as a back up of the back up I'd think. He has not beaten massa enough. The big 3 are settled at least for now, Leaves the teams below that. McLaren, force India the 2 main attractions, Williams are surely a distant 3rd. Unless your a young driver your not getting a TR drive. Renault could be the shock, if they can make a good car anything can happen.
Probably Perez or Button to get Massa's seat, or Bottas goes to Renault and both get seats. Perez is more likely to stay put or gamble on a works drive with Renault than head to Williams though. Mind you, if Williams are more desperate for money than experience and talent, Lance Stroll could be in with a shot. I don't think Alex Lynn can match Stroll's chequebook.
Yea I can't see Perez leaving FI tho Williams will likely have a bigger budget its not going to be a massive step forward never mind getting settled etc. I expect Renault to be challenging McLaren and Ferrari next season for 3rd. Theyre a big team and have had an entire season to work on next years car. Williams have always been good at bringing an unknown driver paired with someone experienced.
Since they've already embroided his name on the clothes that's a sure thing imo. Button will go to WEC to join Webber and possibly do some RallyCross or TV presenting in between as he's good mates with the Sky crew. I'd love to see that, I'd rather him than Damon Snore. FI are a dark horse. Will VJ stay out of jail and continually get funding? I don't know where they get their investment from. I agree Perez would rather be in a Renault seat than Williams though.
Button would be good on TV and again in WEC or Rallycross its a tough one. I think the vultures are circling so to speak with VJ, so may be another team up for grabs soon. If I were Perez I'd be looking at jumping ship Renault for me would be a better choice A works team is always going to be more inviting than a customer. An while Williams are good they just seem a bit stuck so to speak.
Very stuck. But tbh they've been stuck since post-Montya in the 00s. Their only leg up was the Merc engine advantage two years ago, and now that's fallen by the wayside.
Do you think it'll be possible for a non works team to compete and dominate an era rather than for a season aka 90s Williams compared to Brawn? Obviously Red Bull is the go to case study but they seem an exception as they operate like a works team with works status for the engine. I could honestly see that changing if Renault dominate. They have the funding clout beyond that of even some of the works teams which again puts them in a unique position. Without trying there almost is a 2 tier formula within the sport. The push for Junior teams is really an extra layer of this 2 tier system
It's totally 2 tier Formula now. The fact they have sponsored seeder teams for young drivers made this happen. Williams and FI are the outcasts here.
