I was considering just now buying every Call of Duty I could find on PC and playing them through, start to finish.

I know I can't get COD3 as it was console only, but do you guys reckon it's worth grabbing the others for the story? I was thinking in the run up for Black Ops, you see... Get me into a COD mood :)

Edit: Just so I've got this right, it would be...

    Call of Duty (+United Offensive)
    Call of Duty 2
Call of Duty: World at War
    Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

If I'm missing anything, let me know.

I've put them in this order so the modern ones come one after the other for story's sake.

    It's a shame COD3 wasn't PC release. :(

yep. CoD2 and 4 were the best. You can play the first if you want but starting with CoD2 would be better since its engine is much better and the core gameplay is similar.

I'd love to do that too but i've got mock exams in the week leading up to black ops. :wallbash:

However I did buy the Call of Duty pack when it was on sale on Steam for like £15 so it's always an option another time. :D

I'd go so far as to say that CoD2 and 4 are the only ones worth playing at all at this point. Add in World at War if you're a big WWII fan.

1 was decent, not really a bad game in its own right, but as you say you're perfectly fine starting off with the sublime 2. 3 as the OP knows is console only but it's really not missing anything by skipping it. 4 was again sublime a employed and strong story along with a good engine and gameplay. 2 and 4 together will give you a great feel of CoD at its best, one in WWII and one in modern times.

World at War wasn't bad in my book. The story was fairly good if you can stomache yet another WWII story. Gameplay isn't bad because it's such a clone of 4. Certainly not essential, though. Definitely not if you're into multiplayer, 4 is much better for that.

Modern Warfare 2, in my book, completely trashes 4's legacy. Takes a great story and gameplay then throws it all out the window. Completely overwhelms the player with ridiculous plot twists and useless theatrics. I had to stop playing and just walk away for a couple hours after having a snow mobile chase which ended with me jumping over a chasm and narrowly escaping my enemies. Like some kind of bad action movie. Imo, there's a reason people just call it "MW2", it's lost rights to the Call of Duty title that precedes it.

    This ^^

2 and 4 all the way. I still play both regularly, with the occasional sprinkling of W@W.

There's some really awesome rifle-only servers for 2 if you take a fancy, and I still don't think they've made a better set of multiplayer maps than 2's. There's very few I would skip, compared to the rest on which there's only a few I really like. But if single players what you want 2 and 4 are plenty, unless you really like Keifer Sutherland.

Rifle only was the **** in CoD2. I've never played a game in which mid range weapons (rifles with no scope) can still be incredibly precise and powerful at long range and yet, still effective at close range (once you learn how). I had a ton of fun in CoD2 because of this.

cod 2 was fine for me but i personally preferred the first game and it's expansion. all the guns were so well balanced and had an admirable amount of kick. you had to be really good to use the mp44 on full-auto in the first game. There really isn't a "bad" COD game. all of them are pretty fun to play in their own right.

Speaking of 2, this thread got me all nostalgic for it so I went on for a game there. Realised the last time I was playing it I'd been on a modded server, the kind that downloads a bunch of stuff and takes over the menus and plays cheesy metal instead of the normal menu music etc. I found this to be annoying, went and found the modded files and deleted them. Voila, back to normal. Except it crashes every single time I click join game.

I've tried plugging in a mic, it's running off a SoundBlaster so no realtek issues, I have no idea what's wrong. Anyone have any ideas? Really want to find those rifle servers again :grr:

I totally love COD 1 and 2 . Dont know how to express the feeling of playing war in WWII . COD is perfect to me , it gave me everything , the feeling of being a soilder ( sniper map ) or the feeling of winning in the last stage , when your partner rushing for victory , I also run like one of the AI haha

Has anyone tried playing through the CoD games using only their nations weapons, by this I mean you don't pick up the enemy weapons?

It's a thought I had for the next time I play the whole series, I will probably find it quite difficult to do as there is a German semi-automatic rifle that I just love. It allows me to use the one to the head and one to the chest shooting pattern.

On the subject of CoD weaponry, is anyone else peeved that both MW games don't allow semi-auto fire for their assault rilfes? I find in very wastefull of ammo to be blasting away on full auto the whole time.

I generally try to use only native wepons, especially used to online. Now I don't care so much, whatever gets the job done. I even click auto-assign on the team page :eeek:

Quick update... I've bought all the games except for World at War. I couldn't find online if World at War could be used second hand or not. I know it's a GFWL game, but I was wondering if it's like MW2 where it locks to a Steam ID, or would I be alright buying a second hand copy of WAW?

Does that mean second hand ones work? They're not locked to any kind of ID?
