I am worried that the decision by the German regulator to withhold the AZ vaccine from the over 65s as there was insufficient data on effectiveness (Because not that many over 65s in the study caught the virus and you can't deliberately expose them just to test!) will get conflated on the internet into an idea that it isn't safe.
Having read the 'best efforts' clause and definition I don't think AZ have anything to worry about. That Pfizer are also struggling to meet demand gives AZ a get out of jail free card, that 3 month delay is going to prove costly.... I mean who writes or accepts a bloody contact with a 'best efforts' clause, it pretty makes the whole thing worthless.
To a certain extent I agree with the sentiment - a virus which has a vanishingly tiny death rate among their age group, yet the lockdowns etc will prove most costly to the youngest during their educations. Part of me thinks they should be allowed to socialise and resume student life pretty much as normal, and let those at risk isolate themselves. But then enforcing that, and ensuring that the middle ages of 30-60 don't get adversely penalised is an impossible task.
They might not die from it but they are just as likely to carry and transmit it as anyone else. How about they try a spot of social responsibility?
Yep, I get both your points, and I agree with the lockdowns. I'm just saying I can sympathise with how they feel, frankly I feel a bit that way for myself already being outside a high-risk group and quite happy to obey distancing etc. David on your particular point I'm simply talking about making people responsible for their own risk, unfortunately it can't be left to people to be sensible.
PPE was procured through private companies rather than through the usual government procurement process and channels. Vaccines were procured through a government agency and usual process and channels.
I think they are entirely right, the UK lockdown was / is a mistake. It was / is; vague, ineffective, late, too short and too poorly policed.
A good point well made. I think they're suggesting that the government should have done a *proper* lockdown, properly policed, started early and left late - which, as other nations have shown, would have worked a lot better than eye-test trips to Barnard Castle...
Having spoken only today to a nurse who did a 12-hour shift on ICU, juggling 6 beds instead of one, with an inexperienced redeployed nurse to assist her, I would say that the lockdown didn't come nearly soon enough and is absolutely necessary.
Yup, NZ did it properly and had a 20,000 strong crowd at a Six60 gig. Ya know, those things that use to happen. What we're doing now is what we should have done last year, as was suggested at the time.
Brexit thread or Coronavirus thread? Tweet— Twitter API (@user) date Or maybe just merge the two into a general current s**tshow thread?... *sigh*
Brexit deal is dead, EU just made sure of it. Invoking article 16 like this is nuts, UK will respond in kind lasted 29 days All vaccine manufactures are behind schedule, not sure how this comes as a shock to anyone, scaling vaccine production for the world will take time. It will be 2023 before everyone can be offered a covid vaccine at the last estimates available. The logistics of getting a vaccine into certain country’s will take all the major nations coming together to solve problem will be later on. UK vaccination should be completed by September at the latest at current pace. EU won’t be miles behind this maybe October November. UK government has done a terrible job in this crisis, 100k+ dead and still rising is proof enough. Not many governments can say they have successfully negotiated this. None in the western world anyway. Unless success is classed as not so many dead as another country. That’s not my idea of a success. Australia / New Zealand showed a way especially for a Island like ours they have successfully negotiated this so far I think people’s reactions show a different tonne to what would be been said if this was trump personal feelings. Jean juncker and uk goverment killed any chance of a good deal.
Total shitshow. Now you may have noticed, in occasional comments of mine, that I lean slightly towards the pro-EU side of things. But even I think that the Commission has been behaving utterly stupidly and appallingly in this scenario. The EU is managing to thrash in one week its reputation as the reasonable side in the whole Brexit debacle that it built over the last 4 years. When even Remainers are going "WTF dude?!?" you know the EU ****ed up bad.
