Yeah i'd clocked that. Makes the UK line look closer to France, Italy and Spain now. We have to remember when it hit Italy they got slated for lack of preparedness and dealing with it, we had that warning and yet are doing worse.
Yep, and that is a huge reason why criticism of the government for their handling of this crisis is totally justified.

https://uk.yahoo.com/news/clap-for-our-carers-coronavirus-084252115.html Arsehole. Been seething at that all day. He says stuff he expects them not to know. Of course they know they're putting themselves in ridiculous amounts of danger. And no, it won't save any one but let's face it if every one refused to do anything to help we would all be dead. What made me seethe even more was the comments. "They don't listen and don't know we are doing it any way" That's my cousin Sue. On the balcony at St Helier hospital in Sutton. What are they doing up there? Good thing she isn't clever like him really isn't it? otherwise she would have stayed at home and every one in that hospital would have died. I'm getting really tired of shitty, ungrateful articles like that. And it doesn't let the government off the hook either, it just makes them look like c**ts even more. Nurses do what they do because they are cut out for it. They love what they do, and they accept it's dangerous but go beyond that. She had every chance not to go back to work but said "f**k it" and went any way. And I know that because I spoke to her on the phone after she got back from her cruise and she told me it herself. "Over 100 healthcare workers have died so far !" yeah, and how many lives have they saved, or made more comfortable for others who have died? "Send a message the government can't ignore !" and how does the **** expect people to do that?
Apparently these asshats tried to storm the Michigan State Capitol chamber while the representatives were in session.
Imagine what would have happened if black people protested peacefully in front of the state Capitol. Now tell me what happened to these assholes. If that isn't considered terrorism, I don't know what is.
My first thought on seeing them: Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but a big gun is never just a big gun.
Not to be flippant, but the NHS employs 1 in 20 of the working population of the UK, so 119 deaths out of nearly 27000 is statistically safer than pretty much any other sector.
No need to imagine: the US (encourage by the NRA) decided to impose sweeping restrictions on firearms ownership (Mulford Act and then Gun Control Act), as well as pointing COINTELPRO to quash the Black Panthers.
The HSJ did an interesting analysis on the COVID-19 deaths of healthcare professionals. Preliminary results suggest that: - the death rate of HCPs tracks almost exactly that of the general population - HCPs working in high-risk areas/close-up with COVID-19 infected patients are not overrepresented in this HCP group that died of COVID-19. This in turn suggests that: - PPE is effective in shielding HPCs who work in high-risk areas/close-up with COVID-19 patients; - HCPs are experiencing the same rates of infection as the general population, and therefore possibly through the same vectors. Of course this relies on effective PPE and risk management in the workplace. I suspect that the picture for care workers in care/nursing homes may well be different.
They're getting PPE. St Helier is one of the most run down hospitals in the area. They were talking of closing it for 20 years. I was born there, and I spent many months in there as a kid. It has hardly been touched since.

Whilst I sympathise with your view of that article, personally I am very uncomfortable with the clapping each week. It has the effect of making people think "something is being done" for the NHS when in fact it isn't, it is purely a distraction. The people clapping are the same people who voted in a government that has defunded the NHS for at least the last 10 years. Whilst I think it is great that everyone want to show their appreciation for the NHS in some way, no matter how small, if people want to actually do something then they need to hold to account the government that has caused the NHS to get into the state it is in. I really feel for the NHS but I get a sense that the clapping is a way to assuage the guilt. Of course the government is very happy that they can make voters distracted and happy with the clapping because they don't want people to start asking hard questions. Clapping doesn't get the NHS the funding it needs. Clapping doesn't get the NHS staff the real support they need. Clapping doesn't pay the NHS staff the salary they need (and deserve). Clapping doesn't get the NHS the PPE it needs.
No, but it shows appreciation and respect. For morale. Something that article sorely misses, or simply doesn't understand. This **** is a war. These nurses are soldiers, and it's just. Not clapping to prove a point to the govt already being made (it was front page of all the papers yesterday) is just wanky. It's not like people are not aware of the situation. Unfortunately, though, many who vote Tory are incredibly greedy and selfish, so won't care. They voted them in for their reasons, and will keep them there all of the time it is appealing to them to do so. They don't care about nurses, or anything farther than their nose. I know several nurses. They are all on Facebook every day, and these videos get passed around all of the time (people clapping). And they see it. So if you personally don't think it helps? that's up to you.
