Oh dear. Voyage to the bottom of the acting class? It's like if the Abyss had been made by the people behind Bonekickers. I'll watch the next episode to see if it gets better, Spoiler at least the annoying woman is dead now . But so far, it's not floating my DSV (or should I say making it neutrally bouyant) BTW - I can just see the discussions during casting "What else have you been in?" "Oh, a medical drama" "Really? Me too! Which one?" "Holby City. You?" "Oh I'll doubt you've heard of it...."
I think it has potential, the idea at least is vaguely interesting but I have to say I thought the first episode was terrible. Whoever thought that making all of the characters annoying morons would endear them to me was very mistaken. I will give it another chance though as there seems to be nothing else on worth watching right now When I first saw that character I did a bit of a double take, couldn't believe it was him!
Don't you think it's great that it's set in the present day and: We have the technology to build a DSV without a unified pressure hull! All those connecting corridors seem to run outside the hull! Oh - hang on, it must be because it's made of magicmetal and unobtanium, as a vast hydrothermal vent can land on it and not crush it. You can get an Ice Breaker all the way to the North Pole. (I know the ice caps are shrinking, but I don't think you'd get a breaker all the way there - even now!) The crew of 'specialists in the field', which would have been highly trained and psychologically profiled to ensure they don't bug out on long duration dives are just 'specialists'. If you know what I mean. And - The captain decides to give the chief engineer emotionally explosive final recording of his wife's last moments just as they send the mini sub out into a hazardous situatuion that might just require his intervention
I couldn't even get past the trailer for this, it looked so totally awful. Probably because it's full of Holby City actors.
The Den of Geek review pretty much sums it up to a tee: http://www.denofgeek.com/television/554783/the_deep_episode_1_to_the_furthest_place_review.html Especially:
If I hadn't been watching it from bed (I'm reverting to the lazy student version of myself) I would have turned it off when I saw those two bits, I think I may have even shouted at the screen a bit too
It wasn't that bad! Small details aside, the mystery surrounding the monster, huge sub, and the possible government agent on-board the DSV will keep me watching
Yes. Yes it was. Monster = Huge Sub. Potential Government Agent? No potential about it. "Here's your new crew member. He's from the Admiralty" pretty much tells you all you need to know about him, really. They're also being a bit heavy handed with the usage of Ancient Greek Legend. Elysian Fields? That'll be the domain of the dead / afterlife then. Hermes? Messenger of the Gods & Guide to the Underworld. Orpheus? Went to the underworld to retrieve his dead wife and did so after impressing Hades. Can you see where they're going with this?
Made as a response to the rumour that James Cameron was making "Aliens underwater", which eventually turned out to be the Abyss. Not seen Deep Star Six though, so might check it out. That JIM suit so obviously gets used a la Ripley and the powerloader though.
I couldn't make it past the first 20 minutes, which were the worst 20 minutes of my week so far. Awful show!
Ok - I watched the second episode. It was marginally better (If you didn't focus too much on the acting), but with this show that's not saying a lot... Spoiler So - the Admiralty clearly thought it was the Ruskies down there, so they send along their man. A man that would have been chosen for the job, you'd think, due to his naval skills, military training, fluency in Russian... Apparently not, as every spy / special agent requires a copy of an English / Russian dictionary, just to provide a smoking gun for the rest of the crew. The set of the Volov is quiet impressive - and apparetly easily identifiable as Russian, due to the welding? Da, Comrades - this is so. Even the survivors on the Volov comment on how shonky the welding is on the Orpheous, and that it clearly isn't Russian... Mind you, how does a theoretical physicist with a 'zany accent', who was complaining she wasn't an engineer earlier on, recognise a good weld from the Motherland? I also particuarly like how spooked and jumpy the Volov crew where, demanding to know who our heroes are whilst holding them at gun point - but as soon as Captain Janeway points out that it's the Russian Radar dish that's been deep frying everything without any proof, we're all bezzie friends? Yay! group hug. Oh and surprise suprise! Look, here's the parts from the Hermes mini-sub - Just in time to be found before the credits roll.
hate the show, its god awful. tried watching the second episode, credits rolled and I realised that I'd been reading, looking at my phone and talking to the wife for most of it, just so I wouldn't have to pay attention to the rubbish acting and plot. I mean talking to the wife of all things.
To be honest, i don't know the show at all, and after reading 1 or 2 of the reactions from you guys I never would have, but after reading through your post GreatOldOne, I really want to watch it, just to see these parts you described
It's worth watching just to pick holes! Spoiler I mean, how many submarines do you know of that have concrete floors? There's a scene in a "lab" on the Russian sub, and as the two women from the Orpheus walk in, you can clearly see that they hadn't bothered to dress the floor of the soundstage / hanger they where filming in. Or the birthday video Clem sends his daughter - it's great how he managed to arrange with Grannie the perfectly tailored pauses in his pre-recorded message. "Right Gran - I'll say that you've got a present for the wee one, and then pause for exactly 32.5 seconds to allow you to get the surf board. OK?" Or the autopsy on the dead Russian they brought in. One moment, the Biologist / Chemist bloke hasn't done anything like this since they disected a bunny at school. The next minute he's better than Quincy, Agent Scully & the whole cast of Bones combined, as he manages to extract the brain of the stiff and then neatly stitch his skull back together so well you can't see the join... Next week - We switch from watching the Abyss Lite to a Reduced Shakespeare Company production of K19: The Widow Maker
When I saw this had Visnjic and Nesbitt and it was ABOUT SUBMARINES!!! I was very excited. Sadly I didn't make it past 15 minutes because I wanted to kill myself.
