I would like to start a discussion about pros and cons of the Full HD 16:9 monitor technology. More and more manufacturers jump on that train, BenQ has with the E-Series (E2200HD, E2400HD) and M-Series already 4 models on the market, Dell also launched one recently, and there might be a few more.

As far as I noticed the opinions of users are diverse and I gathered a few ideas and comments I came across recently:
    • It offers a new great display experience, especially for blu-ray dvd watching and gaming
    • Some say that actually manufacturers take a chunk of the display, as 16:9 (1920x1080) has 120px less than 16:10 (1920x1200) and consider it a marketing hype
    • 16:9 Full HD monitors will be the new trend as manufacturers push them into the market due to lower production costs. I read that the panel producers get 18 pcs 16:9 panels but just 15 pcs 16:10 panels out of one raw material glass panel which naturally optimizes production
    • Professionals like coders and editors prefer 4:3 due to better visability
    • Basically the advantages of 16:9 are not perceived yet

    What's your opinion? Experiences? Let's discuss!!:clap::clap:

    Erm, what?

Most widescreen MONITORs are 16:10, only widescreen TVs appear to be 16:9.

I love my 16:10 monitor as I get more real estate, maybe not a massive amount more, but still a significant amount for doing coding/work. When I turn on my games consoles it jumps to 16:9 with no problems and no stretching.

There is a bit of me that is still cynical about widescreen in general (ie. "widescreen, more like shortscreen if you ask me") :)

if the price is a lot lower than 24inch, i'd get it.

    eg. 24inch good quality: £400. 24inch 16:9 same quality: £300

otherewise, i still like to watch my Simpsons or other 4:3 TV shows non-stretched.

4:3 is ideal for 3D work - for me anyway, dont fancy going 16:9 unless im pushed - These 2 cheap 19inch samsung CRTs work ok for me for the moment hehe.... ive seen people working with a 16:9 screen divded into 4 and its like working through a letterbox. Can see the benefit for perfectly fitting films... but im not sold on the idea.

Main advantages of the 16:9 is the common broadcast signal ratio - so when you play your PS3, 360 etc the picture will be slightly squashed and with no setting to change it to 16:10. Obviously watching TV and playing movies have this effect too. I found it to be a very minimal problem, my monitor is 22" 16:10 (1680x1050) put supports a 1080p signal (gets a full 1080p image and compresses it to 1680x1050) and I can barely notice it when playing my PS3. Having said that, you can get a 24" monitor and with 1:1 pixel mapping just cut the top and bottom by 60 pixels.

It's actually more pixels at 22-inches.

Pivot technology gives the Full hd 16:9 even more functionality. Even these people who use monitors mainly for text editing or think that 16:9 format needs too much scrolling in websites can have a great time with Full hd 16:9.

Is this special 16:9 pivot technology?
Last time I checked, 16:10 screens can be pivoted too. Then they're just that little bit wider, and don't feel so cramped.

Sony just recently released a new notebook with 16:9 screen in 16.4in. I think we will see more of 16:9 and also rather unfamiliar screen sizes soon.

saw dells new 1080p 23inch monitor, depending on price would rather get that then 22inch 1680x1050
I'm all for 1 aspect ratio, sure, you loose some height but width is more important as human sight takes in more horizontally then vertically.
Now we just need ONE HDCP compliant connection method. Display port, HDMI, the wireless one, i'm not fussed just make a standard and stick with it.
    USB3.0 ? :)

It will be hard to move on to 16:9 since all games of this age :D will not have options to set graphics for 16:9, they will all be in 16:10 wide so... It will hurt at the beginning. But later when more than 50% move on to these, then it will not be any problems...

not a major thing to provide support for diff aspect ratio is it? know some older codes you change res to what ever u want in ini file
besides, I don't wanna play Commander Keen fullscreen :) be assaulted with massive pixels.
