Mine activated about 2 hours-ish after i turned it on. I activated my iphone with the micro sim in, waited a few hours then turned off / on and it started working.

Every time i pick this thing up i start grinning, worth the 4 hour wait in a queue!

Ok guys, just how good is that screen? I think my 3GS has a great screen so I would like the opinions of people who have moved up from this.

Honestly, it's nothing short of amazing. When I looked at it, the first thing to cross my mind was "a handheld device shouldn't be so damn readable".

However, you will start feeling a little impatient as you wait for your favourite apps to be updated.

Hmm. Well its been about 4 hours since I got it and put the sim in and turned it on with still no joy.
I'll have to try with the missus' sim to see if its a sim port issue I guess!

    ::edit::

Weird, putting her sim in activated the phone, then switching back to mine got me running!
Coincidence or weird bug. Who knows.

I am a Blackberry fan and it will take a lot or me to change my opinion, but we got our demo in store this afternoon and I have to admit a damn nice little toy.

Still stick to my Blackberry though

Both mine & Mrs Goo's iP4's activated within minutes in store.

No yellow screen or splotches on either, but the signal strength has been up and down all night so far... but with no detriment to call quality or 3G data. I think it could be a software issue, rather than a hardware one. IIRC, a similar thing happened with the 3G when it came out, and was rectified in an OS update.

Still can't get over how friggin fast it feels. Angry Birds used to take ages to load, and would often stutter when being played. Not any more - and it's now iOS4 aware, so its multitasking - leave a game half way through, do something else and come straight back to the bird you where about to fling. Cool. :)

the screen is so amazing, i was reading Macrumours forum in portrait mode without any problem, all text are fully readable.

i was searching for this, can't find an answer, you guys might know:

how many apps stay in the multi-tasking tray? i have now managed 9 full pages (4 icons) of apps, almost exhausting my collection of apps i care to launch. does it drain battery? some apps on that tray still seems to do the launch animation and doesn't save where it left off, so was it in background/multitasking?

to me, the multitasking app tray just looks like a recently opened apps list, nothing more.

It will only multitask if the app has been updated to. Otherwise it will just restart. In effect it is just the most recently opened apps. The idea is that eventuall all devs will update their apps so they can multitask. In the background they use no battery as long as they are not using backgroun VOIP/uploading etc.

Most applications that run in the background (say twitter, facebook, IM, Calendar, RSS) will periodically connect to the internet to get the latest information - a background app won't use much battery, but to say it'll use none is not correct except for apps for which background data is useless.

if that's the case, surely apps shouldn't default to background. or we should be given a choice to turn off auto-backgrounding nature of certain apps.

currently i have 11x4 app icons in my multitasking tray, doesn't seem to stop and i am nearly running out of apps to launch. isn't that going to suck a lot of power if it goes unmanaged? i thought Jobs said if you see a task manager, it's not done properly.

(sorry, i am used to jailbreaking way of saying backgrounded apps)

Best screen I've ever seen on anything ever ever. Nothing short of breathtaking. Sounds like hyperbole but it really REALLY isn't.

Apps that don't access the internet will just stop when you background them, and won't do anything. Theoretically, you can have as many apps open as your phone allows (ie 16, 32, 64gb of apps if necessary).

Some apps (let's use Twitter or MSN as an example) need to access data in the background so they can make sure they're up to date. Because of this, Apple lets them have a service that can execute every so often, which will let them get all the data necessary.

This doesn't use much battery (much less than iPhone 3g multitasking) but because of (if certain apps are open) the apps that need to access the internet every five minutes, the data usage is much higher than it would be without, which means your phone battery life can decrease more than usual because your phone needs to communicate over the 3g network, an inherently battery-unfriendly process. A smart app will detect when you aren't using it and respond accordingly, but I'm sure that some developers will be dumb and will just have it check every five minutes, which will definitely drain the battery significantly.

Btw you can kill background apps if you want to by opening the tray then holding down on one of then as if you were moving it on the home screen. Then press the little minus sign that appears.

I had a play with one of these iphone 4's today. It was great. We tried to make the signal plummet like in the youtube videos but it didn't work the same. The signal seemed pretty stable. The screen was amazing, even better than I expected. I'm wary of the signal issue though. I wonder if it's a fault with some phones, or if it depends on how you hold it.

my point is that there should be a way to set which app will default to background and which won't. currently all apps with this ability will go to background on home button press, thus may drain battery life when its not needed. (eg, a speedcamera app i just found, but i don't drive 95% of the time)

personally still prefer Backgrounder way of able to set everything. requiring to manually go into task manager in disguise to end a certain app is not ideal.

Apple's response to antenna problem is hilarious. they'd never admit to a design flaw.

they don't run in the background in the same way that jailbreak backgrounding works - most execution suspends and the app hooks into various services the phone provides that are always running. it makes no material difference as to how many you've got open, as most of them aren't technically doing anything.
