    (I don't mean to troll)

Why would you want one ? Aren't you put off by all the problems it has ? Is the difference between the 3GS and the 4 really that interesting ?

    (I'm genuinely curious)

lol, fantastic video, it really is similar for me on my 2G with iOS 3.

only problem with iphone 4 are proximity sensors and antenna. proximity sensor should be fix-able with software update, antenna is a problem that needs to be addressed on Friday.

i hope it's voluntary exchange, i will be exchanging since there is a hairline scratch on my screen :(

I want an iPhone 4 because (with the exception of iOS 4 on my 3G iPhone) it has been the best phone operating system I've ever used (with SE coming a close second, followed by the higher end nokias), and even in my phone's crippled state, it is still a damn sight better than a lot of phones I've had the displeasure of using.

Yes I am put off by the multitude of issues currently, as probably are most people.. but as they say, the juice is worth the squeeze. A lot of the issues are going to be sorted and Apple (hopefully) will swap out the affected handsets as they seem to be doing now.

Difference between the 3GS and 4.. 3.2MP Camera vs 5MP with flash and 720p HD video recording. Double the RAM, faster processor, gyro, facetime, 'retina display', nicer design (shame about the signal..) better graphics processing... loads of things.. just watch the keynote or something for most of the features that are in the iPhone 4 vs the 3GS..

I'm just holding out for as long as I can so I can a) save as much money as possible to either get it SIM-free or on a low monthly contract b) wait until the hardware issues are fixed. and c) wait until the supply/demand balance reaches something more of an equilibrium..

It honestly works no problem at all on my old 3G.

Have you tried a DFU restore maybe?

not much point in getting 4.0.1 just signal bar update. (same as 3.1.3 compared to 3.1.2, just adding iPad into dictionary)

tomorrow's announcement will be the real deal or no deal. phone recall? free bumper (hope not, already got one) or a couple quit of iTunes credit.

I have a friend with the iPhone 4 and yea there are a few problems, with the antenna, however we have tried to loose the signal, and isnt as easy as people are making out, plus i always use a case with mine, and using a case stops that from happening.

Is that an official update for iPad or a beta?

Whatever it is I hope it includes multi-tasking and RSS feeds for mail!

I'm not so sure... I downloaded the update last night, and I see a decrease in available signal (according to the bars) at home. I used to get 5 upstairs, but now see 4, with occasional bursts to 5.

But the thing is, according to Anadtech, the range that the bars cover is now larger:

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/3821/iphone-4-redux-analyzing-apples-ios-41-signal-fix

If that is so, the lower end of the spectrum has been widened. The software must have some sort of cut off as to when it says 'nope, no signal' and displays the no service or searching labels in the display, which will be driven by the lower limit. With it being lowered in the update, I'm guessing you'll see less cut outs...

Also - reports around the net saying that the press conference later today will not be to announce a recall, and that the death grip reception issues some people suffer will be delt with in a further software update.

    http://www.macrumors.com/2010/07/15/iphone-4-signal-issue-can-be-fixed-with-a-software-update/

They're currently passing out the tin helmets at Infinite Loop, and telling the crowd control guys to "lay down suppressing fire in short, controlled bursts..." should it all get ugly ;)

Will be an interesting conference. Full of apologies maybe?

Quite disappointed with the updates to the iPhone and iad. You were right about them being very minor changes/fixes GOO.

So everyone gets a free case from Apple, but they still say it isn't a problem...interesting.

    Question:
If a free case is available to everyone buying an Apple iphone 4 up to September 30th, and they state they are NOT changing the design, does that mean that everyone buying one after september 30th will be stuck with the antenna issue?
Is this a case of you knew what you were buying so don't expect us to sympathise?

Also, the internet is alive with "free bumper case for iphone owners" reports. Jobs said they can not make enough bumpers, so you will be given a choice of other cases instead. They are NOT offering free bumpers.

Really don't know how to feel about all of this. Kinda pleased they are doing something. Kinda feel its not enough. Hmmmm

The general consensus is Apple will quietly update the iPhone4 hardware with a coating to minimise the antennae problem (some even think they're doing so right now), so after September it probably wont even be an issue. I doubt they want to say this publicly, because it might hurt current sales due to people then waiting for the hardware revision.

They are offering free bumpers, but will also offer other cases if people don't want to wait until bumpers are in-stock.

TBH what else realistically could be done? It's not Apple's style (nor any other multi-billion dollar corporation) to get on their knees and beg for forgiveness. They did pretty much what everyone expected them to do.

I'll take your word for it on the bumper thing. I didn't get that from watching the live engadget reporting. Hope you are right. Bumpers are far nicer IMO than the other cases out there.

In answer to your question, I kinda hoped they would do what you mentioned in your first paragraph. An in-store coating, taking 5 mins would've been nice. Or a bunch of coated aerials shipped out to stores with technicians in-store to swap out the old and replace with the new. Realistically, I didn't think this was likely, but I lived in hope.

My "problem" is that I use my iphone for running, using the GPS tracking and Nike+ system. It will be going in an armband (when they are available), but it will be a bugger having to take it out of the bumper to fit it in the armband. I just want a phone that works.
Of course, if Belkin introduce a fast-fit armband that takes the iphone IN its bumper that would be OK by me.
Also, will the phone still fit in the docking stations while in the bumper?

For the record, this is my first apple purchase. I hated Apples for years, and relented based on the fact that my car stereo has ipod control. My house has speakers built into every room, providing you connect an ipod to the dock (already installed when I bought the house....) and it seemed logical to get an iphone rather than the HTC desire I was looking at. And I love the phone. Its such a shame I appear to be one of the 0.5% affected by this issue. Because otherwise its a genius little gadget.
