Aye, I'm aware of the options - Answering the phone with your nose gets some weird looks :p

I just resent the fact that I have to mod/buy something to use a fairly important part of the phone >.>

We'll see what O2 say about me "upgrading" my contract to get one.

Aye, I do like the look of the Droid X, but.. I don't know, just seems to lack the polish.

The Droid X may not look as exciting as some other offerings (it basically looks like a black slab timewarped from the 80's), but it is a very capable phone. Would be on my list if I went Android.

Oh, I'm not saying it doesn't look good (I actually read Anands review of it this morning), it is an impressive device, I was referring more to the OS than the device in terms of "polish".

I may dislike Apple for their rather controlling grip on their hardware, but when it comes to portables, that's sort of what I want (I would like to be able to change the background on the main "menu" as well as the lock screen, but hey). Tested, refined, dependability.

Android feels, to me, the same way the United States does. Young, free where as "iOS" feels more like Britain. Old, experienced. For reasons I've seen mentioned in this thread. By you, if I remember rightly.

The real battle will be between iOS4 and Android 2.2.

I wouldn't buy the Droid X purely because Motorola have locked it down. If you try to root it or modify any system files that haven't been signed by Motorola, it bricks itself in a hardware way.

Aw, spoilsports. :grr: That's rather Apple of them. So much for open source software... :sigh:

Meanwhile I have been using my iPhone 4 all day without trouble --and although I'm right-handed I usually hold it in my left hand. In fact, I have not always been able to replicate the deathgrip signal attenuation problem. Perhaps the hospital is close to a transmission tower (can't see one), but after I made another (trouble-free) call using my left hand, I looked at the signal. Five bars, 3G. I clasped the phone in the grip of death. Still five bars, 3G. I clenched it like that for a good few minutes, making sure I crossed the black divide. Five bars, 3G. Go figure.

Meanwhile, it turns out that the Samsung Galaxy has a deathgrip issue of its own:

Considering out of the 15-20 reviews i've read for the Galaxy S not 1 has mentioned reception or signal issues the conspiracy theorist in me makes me think that is the work of an over-zealous Apple fan....

that's what i thought, considering it's shot on an iphone 4.

however, because they've advertised "advanced external antenna", people are going to be picky. i am sure if they hadn't said anything about antenna, there won't be any of this drama

done that with my old iphone, very handy provided you don't drop your phone, which i've also done, onto hard pavement.

Perhaps, but there is another video on YouTube made by a different user altogether:

Another video testing 7 units. Not always convincing as the signal strength on some networks was not optimal to start with. But at about 6.04 mins. it shows a Samsung Galaxy model with a marked drop on the right side, and a Google Nexus with a little signal attenuation also. Other HTC and Motorola devices were OK.

My theory: this is not about the exposed antenna. This is a new, more general problem possibly to do with a specific new technological trick or component used in some of the new smartphones. Perhaps we're going to see it in other new models over the next months.

Oh. Well, there's another gripe solved.

Aye, I've dropped an iPhone in my time, straight onto some concrete. Spiderweb effect!

anyone else experiencing battery drain after installing Skype iOS 4 update and launching it?

i installed update last night, launched it found it pretty good, then went back to home screen, locked the phone and went to sleep with battery at 73%.

woke up this morning with just over 35% left in battery!

my usual battery drain on iphone 4 over night before installing Skype is 3 to 4%.

Since upgrading my 3GS to iOS4 I've noticed it lagging in numerous places.

    tbh I'd rather downgrade!

Definitely shouldn't lag on a 3GS in the slightest.

Try: rebooting (clears out memory), hard resets (same as, more intrusive though), closing down unused Safari pages (crazy but it does use up memory), a fresh restore (not from a backup if at all possible).
