Of course. But from the point of the consumer that would not be desirable, so advertisers being unable to poll the iPhone is actually not a problem we should worry about.

Unfair, I agree, but all people have to do is move to alternative smartphones. People have choices, even if they don't like the alternatives as much.

True, but an iPhone was never meant for that. It's a toaster. Turn on, use for specific tasks.

Bottom line: let the free market decide. Monopolies only apply when there is no alternative and there are a number of them: Android, Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Nokia's proprietary OS.

So pretty much what everyone thought they'd be.

I have to say, if pre-orders are supposed to start tomorrow, the networks are leaving it very late to announce handset costs. I'm not going to pre-order with any of them unless I know how much the phone is going to cost me on an 18 or 24 month contract.

I agree Goo, they've left it very late indeed. My o2 rep is doing "all she can" for me to make sure that I get an early upgrade and only have to commit to another 18 months of contract at my current price, £55/m iPhone business. I have to admit, I've been over 500 Mb almost every month since I got my contract, although I have tethering for on-site work set up on that contract which probably explains that.

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but why does Mankz make it into every threads tag list?! :p

Great, you can see how many people are buying your product. That's not important. What is important is the number of people who are going back on your game, your app whatever. Now, you can't even do that, Apple has blocked applications which anonymously collect the number of times people are going on the app.

Whoa now. Why would you need to know once the sale is made?

And more importantly: why would users want to tell you? I'm not sure I'd be happy if a company knew every time I opened their app --a bit too intrusive for me. Next they'll embed telemetry for finding out when I use the app, how I use it, where I am when I do... no thanks. If I have feedback for them, I'll be sure to let them know.

It's a two horse race for me due to signal, but assuming Vodafone actually offer this it just killed O2's chance of getting my business. Double O2's data allowance is awesome but free calls to other Vodafone mobiles would be rather useful to me!

Again, this is anonymous, no-loss-to-you stuff.

You say that you'd be sure to let them know if you had a problem, chances are you wouldn't. In any case, these are more about improvements and structure changes, usage patterns to try and keep you playing for longer. It's all entirely harmless stuff, much like how your iPhone records your location to give you location targeted services.

    Like low monthly internet usage?

I cant fault T-Mobile and Web'n'Walk (though they dont actually sell it under that name anymore by the looks of it). On my 1st contract I had my N95 tethered to my PC for practically a year straight (BT destroyed our home line...), only once did they actually phone me up and asked me to tone the usage down, and that was only because I used just under 3GB that month.

On my current contract with my G1 I get a message saying i'm nearing the monthly cap probably every other month (1GB according to their fair usage policy, though I suspect they probably dont bother getting on your case till you go noticeably over it). Yes for the last 2 contracts it's been a £7.50 PM bolt on but once my upgrade comes around i'll be switching to a plan where it comes free.:D

O2 seem to have the better list of customer benefits and Vodafone the more stable 3G network but I literally haven't had 1 single issue with T-Mobile in the 3 years i've been with them.

I doubt they'd offer less than 500MB and I've never gone over 200MB in a single month. They currently offer 750MB as standard. It's more than enough. The bottom line is I get discount on the contract. So it's a win win situation for me personally.

I also just realised that the 24th of June is also the premiere of the new Futurama series. What a wonderful day it will be!

Apple store is down - presumably being updated to take pre-orders.

Still nothing regarding handset costs from the major carriers though, and apart from O2 and the leaked Vodafone tarrifs, nothing on those either...

Still quite happy with my 3GS and only 6 months into a 2 year contract. Looking forward to iOS4 though. I don't need video calling - never used it when I had it on my previous phones.

Of course, if they want to terminate unlimited data for existing contracts, that'll give me a get-out clause and I'll go for a new iPhone 4.

Just spoke to O2. No preorders from them at all.
No other network has anything yet.

There goes my hope of picking up an 8GB 3gs for cheap...
We don't have vendor locking here at all, so all the phones cost sim-free prices, and, quite frankly, the difference between an 8GB 3GS and a 16GB 4 is not worth it.
