finally discovered some details about the soon-to-come Intel Core i7 processor.
    the hex-core.

haven't managed to snap an image of the information to provide solid proof.
but here is the dirty lil information...

Intel Core i7 980X EX Ed
    3.33GHz; 6.4GT/s LGA1366
    12MB; 6 Cores; 3yr Warranty
    BX80613I7980X
    $999.00

hope that satisfies those tech hungry stomaches for now.

I think the price of the i7 980 is going to replace the i7 975. So do you think they will drop the prices of the 975 or will it take some time for it to drop?

And gigabyte always used the best available Intel processor for their open overclocking competition finals. They might use the i7 980 this year. Would love to see some overclocking on this?

the top priced intel cpu (not Xeon) always tends to be $999 - and they will shift everything else down accordingly. i read somewhere that the 960 will be EOLed and the 975 either take its place or be EOLed too.

they alreaydy did some OCing on an engineering sample, i believe they got past 4Ghz, which on an ES is insane. plus some guy messed around with it on LN2, iirc it got 6Ghz+

nope, the pricing was known when this stuff got leaked on 15th December:

Technology is developing so fast its so hard to buy one product and get satisfied.

In a technology magazine in our country i read that intel will release an 80 core processor. I think the release date was somewhere in 2011. But i dont think intel will release it then.

Imagine an upgrade from a present 4 core processor to a 80 core processor!!

Really? It's 14 months now since I built this i7. It's still the weapon of choice now. I've never had a rig remain as viable for so long as this one.

Yea I have to agree. If you bought a 920 in November 08 you'd be absolutely laughing right now. That's a long performance curve!

We're just waiting on Intel to give us a date so we can post our 980X review ^_^ They're in no rush. James has been having fun with it under waterchiller.

But various products are released everyday. Technology develops day by day so you are always tempted to get the best things.
There are many people who built their computers a few months or years ago who want to upgrade.
Pookeyhead when you built your system SSD's must have been unpopular or wasnt released. Dont you wish that you can get an SSD now?

A few months ago a person would have bought a core 2 quad instead of an i7 due to the high prices of i7. Wont he want to upgrade now?

Some time ago ATI 5 series wasnt available. So someone must have bought a 4870 or some other 4 series graphic card. Dont you think that he would want to upgrade now?

It's not all the same item though. There's not a new CPU or graphics card every few months but generally it's all slight performance increments.

However, if there wasn't this continual turn over of parts, I'd be out the job!!

No. I just replaced my boot drive. I replaced a Samsung F1 with a Samsung F3. It never crossed my mind even once to buy a SSD.

The Q6600 was a favourite for quite a while as well. Mind you the i7 920 is still going strong......

    *puts hand up*

i have 2xHD4890 in crossfire, and yes i do have an urge to upgrade to a HD5870, but not for performance. its mainly for eyefinity

however, im going to force myself to get an SSD on the next spend as i know in my hearts of hearts that will make the biggest difference (and make my WEI go up! yay -.-)

You soon hit a point where you can see that the current machine you own has more than enough power for your tasks.

I ask you this. Is faster boot times and almost instance opening applications really worth the money to then suffer on storage space?

Most of us suspend are machines to S3 sleep, hell my 5 year old laptop comes out of S3 sleep instantly. Also when we do a boot from cold, most of us are doing other things at the same time. SSD technology will become better as it gets cheaper to produce and capacity increases. Still too young a technology to care about seriously.

Only if their render whores or encoding nutters. Gaming isn't hugely effected

they could do, but right now the 58xx series offers DX11 and eyefinity. If the 5850 is about the same speed as a GTX280, then a 4890 is in the same region of raw performance. Anyone with a 4870 can overclock and pull similar performance.

So there ain't massive reasons to upgrade at the moment.

How many fingers do you need to count all the games currently available in DX11?
