We should rename this thread: "Real-life Unreal Tournament/Quake/Bioshock arena's"...

Actually, that one isn't abandoned any more. They started up the building in 2008.

    It's a really cool structure, though. :)

This thread is getting better, so I'll add something to keep it alive ;)

I have a great interest in WWII, and can't visit Jersey without spending a couple of hours in the war tunnles or German underground hospital, or Hohlgangsanlage 8 as the Germans called it:

    Fascinating place.

EDIT: This one is an example of another German war tunnel that was intended for use as a hospital, although it's more incomplete than the Jersey tunnels and not presently maintained.

I'll see your boats, and raise you a plane!

The Russian built Ekranoplan flew only feet above the surface of the sea, compressing the air between it's stub wings and the water to achieve lift. It combined the speed of an aircraft with the cargo capacity of a landing ship. If I remember right it still holds the world record for lift at around 1000 tons, nearly twice an A380.

The second page has a link to the location on google earth.

I love those things. I'm so pissed the last one of the KM's is at the bottom of the Caspian Sea, and all the plans and blueprints got destroyed. I'd love to see the big bugger at an aviation museum or something, it must be an awe-ispiring sight.
