Hehe that's some useful information, wasn't aware of that. I only run red lights when I know it's safe to do so - or just cycle on the pavement for afew feet to get past the lights and then back onto the road, I love the freedom of bikes on the road. Overtaking cars is too much fun
Yeah, cyclists really should be obeying road laws. If they don't, they can't really whine when they take a nice knock from an engine.
Ironically, the only times I've ever bene hit by cars it was their fault. Like a taxi turning right across my path before he gets a turning arrow as I fly through a green light.. that resulted in a bent frame and the headtube nearly ripping itself off the top tube due to warping. I sold that bike, once the frame was replaced. Couldn't trust it! Here's my current baby, rear brake has been changed from the crappy tektro and it's due a new set of cranks soon. Nice trailstar, jumper - is that a large frame or is the tubing fairly skinny?
The tubing is fairly skinny as it's a steel frame, it's not a tiny frame but I wouldn't call it large. Just the right size for me at 6ft, seat drops low enough for jumps/downhill and can go high enough to get up hills to get to jumps/downhill. I see you've gone with single speed, thought about doing that myself at one point but decided it wasn't for me. Your bike is looking very clean! Think I'll have to make mine look all sparkly again soon
Yeah totally agree, running reds is for retards. Weaving through traffic is awesome fun, but if I hit a red I just hop onto the pavement to get past it if it's safe to do so, and if not, I wait. I promise you, there's nothing quite like riding home from work at 2am - it's literally downhill all the way, and zero traffic. When I say downhill, i MEAN downhill - really steep hills that you can just fly down. Journey to work = 15 minutes. Journey home... well put it this way, I noticed recently that if I put on slam by pendulum when I leave, it doesn't finish before I'm home. I actually bailed on a shift tonight so I could revise, and just realised that if I'd worked I'd be cycling home soon (cuz it's early closing on a Sunday), and I really wish I was. AHx
Im planning on it, a monster 900 or a buell x1. Actually I have been meaning to get a decent bike for a while but dont want to divert funds from other places. The only time I really ride anymore is if I go camping or go for a quick ride on the road. I cant really justify the cash for a new bike as easily as I can for a new computer or motorcycle.
Jumper, that was when I first got her home - she hasnt been cleaned since SSing made sense for me as I was so hard on drivetrain parts - even on this I broke the freewheel after 4 months and the BB has gone after 5, but the cost in new derailleurs was getting stupid! I never just speed blithely through a red light, but on my home turf where I know the sequences, or at an open junction where I can see that I'm clear, I don't come to a full stop. I weigh over 15 stone so I don't like having to build up all my momentum again!
i'd never run them if i wasnt fully sure that it was safe to do so. most of the time, due to the roads and how the lights work i can get through without causing any hassle. i have had to slam my brakes on only the once mind. best was overtaking a tram downhill, seeing all the peoples faces :O and then realising theres another coming the other way xD stuck in the middle of two trams xD
I've been planning on getting this one for months, but still haven't saved up due to moving house and my wife losing her job. Still... she's got a new one, so I'm trying to save up again.
Nice bikes those konas, and the finish on the blast is dead sexy - I've put a couple together (the bike shop I work in stocks kona, among others)
So, sending the order to you saves me a about €100? I just love the matt black rims on the bike, the way the frame slopes and the brakes.
If I may pose a rather n00bie question in this thread... My current bike's gear system is completely knackered (it's a full suspension Saracen Vice) and needs replacing. I've been looking at the parts I need to replace (cassette, chain, crankset and rear derailleur), but the problem comes in that I currently have a 7speed rapid rise derailleur, so I'm assuming I'd need another rapid rise to replace it? I'm not sure which parts constitute to me requiring one however and the only replacement rapid rise derailleur I can find is a 9sp one, which I assume would require me to upgrade the whole gear system to a 27sp one. Any advice on whether this is necessary and what route I should take would be much appreciated . <A88>
Well first off more gears doesn't always = better so don't feel obliged to upgrade (speaks the singlespeeder ) Have you checked how much a new cassette, chainring set, derailleur and chain are gonna cost you? Including new cables and workshop fees it could well be approaching £70+, whether you want to spend that on a £200 bike is your call. I'm not entirely sure but I think you can replace the RR with a normal mech, although then your indexing will be the wrong way round on the shifters. ReFredzRate - whereabouts do you live? We're in Carryduff, NI mate
You can use a standard mech without replacing anything else - you'll just have to get used to shifting the "opposite" way to change gear. I have used both RR and standard mech with the same set of shifters. I'm still on 8 speed, don't trust the slimness of 9 speed. 8 speed mechs should work on 7 speed cassettes/shifters as the cogs are the same width.
Yep I know what you mean I did think about that and decided I'd rather just upgrade the parts gradually and keep improving on the bike instead of replacing it completely, as the frame (a gorgeous red Y-frame, similar to this but with a silver swingarm) is something I'd like to stay, and even if I end up replacing everything but the frame it'd still be worthwhile. Thanks for the advice from both of you on the RR issue. I'm not too bothered about the extra gears- 21 seemed to do me fine. I'm not all that bothered about keeping my current shifters either, so I might look towards replacing the system with a new standard 21/24sp non-RR set, which should turn out a bit cheaper than what I had in mind. It's just a matter of stopping myself from buying more parts than I can really afford to now . <A88>
No it's not amazing (I just love the look), but it's either that or I buy one that's gonna be around the same quality, as I just don't have the money for a decent frame atm. For now I only use the bike for a paper-round (which I'm giving up shortly), road cycling and some cycle routes, but I'd like to get some more use out of it when I've got it sorted out and put it to better use (ie anything more extreme than a paper-round). <A88>
Yay Mountain Biking thread!. I've been riding for years now, I started with XC but the past few years i've been riding downhill/dirt jumping/street and a bit of cross country just for excersize. My bi-cycle Pic above was a couple of weeks into rebuilding a riding spot. Just starting to look for new riding spots at the moment, everyone sort of gave up with riding last year as all of the spots we used to ride at were flatened within a few months of eachother Yay, got 3rd in the DH Hardtail catagory in my 3rd race ever, it was at Aston Hill. I have not raced since but I would really love to start as it was really good fun
Looks like some nice earth there in the jump spots... Is that a chute? They haven't been round for a while! <A88> - if the bike is rideable, don't chuck money at it. Keep it rolling till it dies, then pick up a second-hand hardtail with the money you didn't spend on repairing it. You'd be amazed at the difference.
