I think the whole case will be done with the rusty-effect.

Thinking matte black with rusted parts?

Brown primer base coat for the rust effect :thumb:

fyi: Heres the info on the hand punch I used to make the fan mounting holes. It makes it quick and easy. No need to debur the holes after cutting.

Roper Whitney No. 5 Jr Hand Punch kit available here
    Hand punch (estimate $60 new)

LOL, I'm guessing a whole ream, Cheaps. ;)

    -------------

    And another lil' update!

Last we left off, Bill was working on attaching one of the dual Steampunk acrylic grills to the side panel shell of the case. Now, let's make it fit in a little bit more with the theme we're going for, shall we? Again, we're just basically screwing around at this point; nothing really serious or anything. I mean, we have like 2 days! Anyways, an idea hit me and Bill loved it. Let's roll with it!

With help from Mr. Grinder here, it makes short work of acrylic material. ;)

But more importantly, it gives it that cool "been-sitting-at-the-bottom-of-the-ocean-for-decades" kind of look, like the rust has begun taking whole chunks of 'steel' from it.

Again, sorry for the pics. Bill's too fast for the shutter-speed. ;)

And after a few mins. we have this. Let's sand down the sides of it to easily accept the primer that's about to be applied to it...

And a half-hour or so later, we have this.

Let's go ahead and hit the PSU's housing I removed the stock stamped grill from and base unit as well...

And this is what we'll be using on it shortly. :)

First, let's apply some iron solution to the housing...

After a bit of a break I began to experiment with it a bit, being careful with the copper sulfate. It's a pesky devil to mess with, and it doesn't taste very good. LOL, I'm kidding. Or am I?

Here's what it looks like in the middle of corrosion...

Masked off the base unit with Scotchbrite green tape and did the same thing to it...

    More coming!

The Sophisticated Finishes Instant Rust is a fun product to work with, once you figure out what type of application fits your needs. You really have to experiment with this stuff. A great deal of our time was spent experimenting with it.

Glad to hear this may inspire you guys! Like i said in the first post, Piloux never explained his application techniques in much detail, which forced us to experiment a lot. The only frustrating part is wait for the results, but you can use a heat gun to speed up the rusting process. Otherwise just keep busy modding other things while you wait :D

    Update - 10-13-09

    Alrighty, another little update here.

Last we left off, the front panel and shell and other misc. parts were getting primered. Here's the front billet panel in all its primered glory. Say goodbye to machined aluminum! Heheh.

Iron layer application initiated on the panel shell. Fun stuff! *splattered everywhere*

The PSU shell was completed along with one of my 80mm single steampunk gear grills Bill had laying around that happened to have some cracks in it, so it fit right with the theme! I was wondering what we were going to do for a replacement grill for the PSU so it worked out great, even though you won't see it in the build. It's nice to know it's there though. ;)

Here's some batches of screws getting the treatment as well...

Trying to get every detail, ya know? :hehe:

Notice those thumbscrews? Bill was telling me about those over some awesome hoagies earlier in the day... apparently, they're Thermaltake screws. LOL. I love the irony.

They're enormous though. And heavy! I'm betting half-dozen of these in a sock can do some serious damage to someone. :hehe:

We were pretty beat at this point, so we took a small break and broke out some "modder's bubbly" to toast to a fun lil' build! :hehe:

    More coming soon!

No worries gentlemen, Mnpctech will be making it possible to purchase your own Nautilus grill, just like the one we made, but 120mm :thumb:

E.E.L., I had broken up that 80mm Gear grill when you weren't looking with my Pliers..lol
