The thin red line 6/10 WW2 movie about the Guadalcanal campaign. I appreciate what the movie was trying to do with regards to existential commentary but it doesn't do it particularly well, or in a coherent fashion. Movie seemed to lack focus on specifically what it was trying to convey and didn't have a proper sense of pace or coherency.
Saw Thin Red Line years ago. Lost interest in it early on and the it just seemed to go on. And on. Finally got round to watching The Lives of Others last night. I enjoyed it but I couldn't really see where it got its excellent reputation from - 8.25/10
Horrible Bosses 7/10 My wife phrased it well wenn she said "at least it was better than Hangover" Correct, Hangeover was cringeworthy...this one was mostly amusing. I should probably up the score one point just for Jennifer Aniston's dirty talk though *edit* I just have
Act Of Valor 6/10 Very well done action scenes. It's almost like watching someone play Modern Warfare, but in real life. Funnily enough - Nvidia are thanked at the end of the credits!
We Bought A Zoo Went to see this with girlfriend & baby daughter as it was this week's 'bring baby along' film. It was quite good for the baby due to the animals but I can't say much more positive about it than that. The story has a beginning and an end and normally in this case they would be quite close to each other. However, the film makers decided to throw in a mish-mash of scenes in order to have a middle as well, but on the whole the story just didn't seem film-worthy. Occasionally a few mildly funny moments, and it tries to be a feel-good movie, but doesn't really make the grade. It's a shame Matt Damon was in it. 99% of the films he leads or co-leads in are great and so I'm drawn to all his stuff but this was a let-down. 4.75/10
Anchorman... 11/10 Rewatched as they've announced there is going to be a squeal. Still probably my favorite comedy film
London Boulevard 5/10 Based on a book, good characters, some action, good actors... Still it just doesn't get into the flow, just doesn't start moving, doesn't get off the ground. Shame.
21 Jump Street - 6/10 Entertaining, endearing buddy movie with a teen-flick backdrop, charming in its own way, but ultimately forgettable. Nowhere near as good as Superbad - but maybe it doesn't warrant the comparison anyway.
The Hunger Games - 7/10 Call me ignorant but I've never heard of this book trilogy until the ads for the movie started appearing for it. Went into the cinema with a vague idea of it being 'like Battle Royale' and for the most part enjoyed the film. The build up to the actual Hunger Games felt a little long for me though, pacing could be better I guess. Gives me an incentive to check out the book now at least
Just watched Your Highness - 7/10 I actually quite enjoyed it, fair few laughs, good cast (in my opinion) nice seeing some actors I've only seen in one or two other things. Oh and Portman has a fantastic ass Also just caught up with watching Happy Endings It's a TV series rather than a film, but just thought I'd recommend it if you enjoy things like New Girl, Friends (from what I know, never really watched it). And it has Elisha Cuthbert in, which is more than enough reason in my opinion
The Pirates! - 8/10 Very enjoyable film, lost a point because the cinema was full of screaming little brats...
Protip: First showing on a Sunday is usually near empty, due to people either making Sunday Lunch or bothering God.
Jacobs ladder 6/10 Spoiler free short synopsis: Vietnam vet Tim Robbins starts seeing weird, not very nice things. It was the ending that gave the movie the meh factor for me. I don't know if I'm just overly critical these days but I find it difficult to find decent films with an interesting premise :|
I also saw this recently, there were only about 6 people in the cinema - saw it on Saturday night at 8.50pm. All the brats were at home. Great film, enjoyed it a lot.
21 Jump Street - 8/10 Havent laughed that much in the cinema for a number of years. Pathetic and immature, but a good laugh. Spoiler Johnny Depp's cameo was a nice touch too
TrollHunter 2/10. What can I say, the trailer looked good and the blurb on the box described it as "The best monster film since Jurassic Park" (which I took with an entire truckfull of salt, but I expected it to be at least somewhat watchable). It turn's out to be a Blair Witch style mockumentry, which plods along with only two set pieces of action featuring trolls in the first hour of the film (there are 4 in total, with the rest of the film being padded out with interviews with the Troll Hunter, the characters driving around various Norwegian locations with the TH pointing out various odds and ends of troll folklore and little else). Judging by the (rave) reviews on IMDB, you need to be Norwegian to actually like (or make any sense of) this film. Personally I just found it slow and boring. Looks like the film was one big troll... (I'll get my coat..)
Watched Attach the Block - 7/10 Wasn't too bad really, started off nice with me feeling the kind of disgust for the youths of today I hope the film was going for, then had the usual growth of characters etc Some laughs, most of the accents/language used through the film brought a smile to my face, utterly ridiculous
How to Train Your Dragon: Arena Spectacular 9/10 Yes it's a live show, but it's based on a movie (and bit-tech doesn't have a live show category). Basically the same plot as the Dreamworks animated movie but with life-size animatronic dragons that fly and breath fire. Bricks were shat. Mind was blown... Definitely see this when it comes to your country. (Made by the same people who did the Walking with Dinosaurs show if you saw that). (Photo by me)
I watched The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (7.5/10) last night. I found it to be better than most romcoms...probably because it was British and played in India which will automatically give it some fun qualities. Otherwise the story is predictable, but that was the only let down. Gulliver's Travels (4/10) Not really funny, just stupid. They could have done a lot more. I'm going to re-watch the Bourne series again, as well as Lord of the Rings.
