The Muppets 1/10 Too much singing, but not the Muppet way, and too little humour Tinker, Tailor, Soildier, Spy 5/10 Clever plot (as you'd expect from LeCarre) and great actors, but too long, waaaaaay too long. Can't keep up it's suspense. 3 out of 4 people fell asleep during the film (which requires attention.) Battleship 5/10 Not something you should be watching with someone who has the least understanding of military proceedings (or physics for that matter) On the other hand a different audience thought it was an entertaining romp. I personally liked Rihanna Hugo Cabret 7/10 Scorsese trying to beat Jeunet at his game, not as good as you'd think from the trailer Brave 8/10 Good. Great considering it's a Disney and they don't sing. Underworld Awakening 6/10 a bit thin in plot, but who cares about he plot in Underworld?
Not sure I agree about Tinker, Tailor there Xir, but that's probably just me gradually enjoying longer and more pedestrian films. Speaking of which: Cast Away - 9.9/10 - I've probably rated it before in this thread, but I really don't care. To my mind this is Tom Hanks' finest performance, a pretty magnificent film all-round really, what I really enjoy is the fact that it doesn't have much of a soundtrack or dialogue most of the way through. It loses 0.1 because the score is a bit heavy towards the end of the film, but that's about my only criticism. Spoiler I'd like to see him get the girl at the end, but that would spoil the whole thing, it's not about him getting everything he wants, no matter how good it would be. Safe House - 6/10 - Pretty unspectacular but well-made action film with spies. 10 years ago this would have been a very successful film, but we've had so many very good films on this theme that they're not standing out as much anymore. Gets a bonus point for gratuitous Denzel Washington, one of my favourite actors.
Quite possibly the movie I have enjoyed the most at any point in the last ten years. Pure, awesome, feel good and I would happily share half a Euromillions win for it to actually happen. EDIT: In other watching.....(thank you Krikkit ) Shoot 'Em Up - 8/10 Take it for what it is. Over the top, ridiculous, gunslinging madness. Thoroughly enjoyed it and the only reason it drops a couple of points because of A: vaguely dodgy CGI in a few parts but they dont really distract from it and B: despite her being agonisingly hot, Monica Bellucci gets on my tits.
Expendables 2: As an actual movie - 4/10 As a movie that gives you everything you need after 2 really **** days - >90,000/10 Absolutely loved it. Still, could have done without Norris (dislike him out of principle of him being a complete nutjob).
God Bless America - 10/10 I rarely give a movie full marks but this was a corker. I love the premise and the pacing and the way it's shot. The story is original and interesting and not wholly made-up. It's a dialogue on today's society and it gets it spot on. Watch this today.
Batman - The Dark Knight Rises 6/10 Too.damn.long. Too.much.drama. Other than that some little things that really made me all "ergh" about it... Mostly plot related. I hate how these movies have to be "loyal to comic books". Nitro Circus - The movie 7/10 If you like Nitro Circus, this is a must.
But is it? I was lead to understand that the Nolan films established a new canon, more or less. I'm not all that well versed on the Batman universe but from what I gather continuity is so confused there are about 10 different iterations of the Joker, etc.
Last few films I have seen, in no order: SKYFALL 9/10 - awesome film. the little gags and references to the older bond films was great. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES 6/10 Wasn't that impressed by the "quick fixes" in this film, and was way to long. BRAVE 7/10 - I fell for the trailers, and they were the best bits. TOTAL RECALL 9/10 - amazing, loved the old skool references.
I forgot SINISTER, this film gets 10/10 havent seen a really good scary film in ages. This one had me freaked out hours after seeing it.
Prometheus - 5/10 Wasn't drawn that into it tbh, I didn't have a clue what was actually happening during most of it. And the ending where she goes off on her own? Too clichéd really. Obviously set up for a sequal. Sent from the Starship Enterprise
I hear what you're saying, and don't know how to answer. I have never read a Batman comic in my life. Hell - I didn't even watch the old 'toons. The thing is, watching this, the thing that irks me the most seems to be done to make comic fanatics calm down...
The Guard (7/10) unexpected, that one (well it probably ran in the cinema's where you live) Nice, good humour (if a bit difficult to fathom at first). A bit slow and with not too well fitting score though.
Dark Knight Rises - 7/10 If a person were to see this movie without ever having heard about it they'd probably be blown away, so maybe the rating is a bit harsh. There was just too much hype, it could never meet expectations. So you've got very nice picture quality, an immense, powerful score/soundtrack, ridiculously 'A-list' cast, very high budget so you get all of the nice special effects etc. The plot however, imo, was pretty lame. The ending, although I personally wouldn't really complain, was a bit simple. The whole movie seemed less intense than the trailer. I think it was too PG for my tastes, it would have been better if it was rated at least 16's.
Men In Black III - 6.6/10 The first MiB scores an 8/10 I reckon. MiB2... well I can't remember it's been so long since I saw it, but I know it was disappoint, hence my reluctance to see MiB3 until I saw some favourable scores on here. Sadly I found it a missed opportunity. There's some good stuff in here, but the like the franchise as a whole it's let down by some weaker writing and one-dimensional baddies. There's something about the bad-guys in all three of the MiB films that I find unconvincing, Edgar in the original was the best of them and he wasn't great. It's a shame because the principle of the MiB films is a good one, with an opportunity for some great storylines, set-pieces and scripts. And at the end of MiB3 there's a twist that brings new depth to the films, but it's wasted because the rest of the content in 2 and 3 don't do the twist justice. Ted - 7/10 Another film that has real potential in the idea but is let down by the writing. There's a number of LoL moments in it but also several bits that just feel like filler. The film started to go downhill towards the end but I found the ending redeemed it slightly. Overall though not enough laughs given the concept for my liking, definitely seemed written for a US sense-of-humour rather than international. And why on earth would you ever say "Teddy-****ing-bear!", it just doesn't scan compared to the simpler "****ing teddy bear!". Argo 8/10 I heard some very encouraging stuff about this and to be honest I felt the film I saw didn't quite live up to that. It's good, but I felt some of the parts that felt like they were meant to be suspenseful weren't particularly and I only got properly engaged by the suspense during the fairly short climax to the film, partly probably because the ending is predictable. It reminded me quite a lot of Apollo 13, but Apollo 13 is just better.
Tower Heist 5/10 as it was simply mediocre. The story is generic and could have used a lot more jokes. It’s not that it’s a bad movie, just…meh. On the other hand, I very much enjoyed Ben Stiller not making himself ridiculous, and Mathew Broderick has finally given in to aging like a normal person. Eddie Murphy was underwhelming, I’d have expected he’d have a bigger part.
The Hobbit: An unexpected journey: 9/10 Wasn't overly thrilled about going to see it, but once I got into it, it was interesting. Peter Jackson's pacing leaves a little to be desired. I'd also say that, for a prequel, it'd be a bit confusing if you'd not watched lord of the rings. From a purley objective standpoint, a less violent, and more story driven LOTR. A bit of a chuckle here and there, A good experience, and didn't really feel like a 3 hour film.
