Mea Culpa David Fincher...for bringing this movie to the rest of the world. I realised the original film is available only in Swedish (and German). Can't run a successfull film in the rest of the world like that.
I haven't seen the remake yet but the original was really good. Really dark and grim! You're right though, the mere mention of subtitles puts most of my movie watching friends off
The Swedish original was non-HD as well, but imho the characters fitted better. Daniel Craig is just too sporty and tough looking, no matter how much he dangles his glasses from one ear. (whoever thought it wise to produce a non-HD TV format in 2009)
Read the book and watch the remake.. That's what I did and don't really feel like hunting down a Swedish-talking non-hd original. Finally watched the latest batman and while it sure repeats itself and the gear just goes way OTT, I still enjoyed it. 7½/10..
The Hobbit was actually a 2 part film, that was Peter Jacksons original plan, however, when it came to filming, they had 'so' much content that they decided to make it a 3 part movie. Sam
Lawless 9/10 Excellent. Tom Hardy is my favourite actor at the moment and he just nails this with consummate grace. Shia Lebeouf was very good too, although definitely overshadowed by his imposing costar.
I will openly admit to a bro-crush on Tom Hardy. Lawless, TDKR, Bronson, Inception, Rock n Rolla, Warrior....
Match Point 7.5/10 I've just finished watching the Woody Allen movie - Match Point. I can't actually decide if I loved or hated it. There were times when it was really tough to watch due to the crazy levels of stress and tension on screen! Scarlett Johansson was really good in it but the leading guy - Jonathan Rhys Meyers was a bit weak in comparison IMO.
Django Unchained 9/10 Christopher Waltz deserves another Oscar for his supporting role. Long, but fantastic movie.
Gangster Squad was a hoot and a half: 7/10. 8/10 if I factor in the hottie I went to see the movie with, 5/10 if I factor in how much the night set me back. Gotta watch a crapload of stuff this month. Still haven't seen Life of Pi, which is KILLING ME.
Mirror Mirror (6/10) nice new view on the story, well told, humorous and a fantastically malignant Julia Roberts. Great fake pictures as you'd expect from tarsem singh. Great sidekicks. Still, somehow underwhelming, mainly because the prince and snowwhites actors were a thorough meh.
Even the Rain - 8/10 This was a very good film, mixing historical, political/social, emotional, artistic to really good effect. I think I've heard it likened to a straight version of Tropic Thunder (which, incidentally, I thought was crap) in that it's based around the shooting of a film and war/civil unrest envelops the production. Didn't score any higher though cos I'm not sure there's anything about it that will make me want to re-watch it. The Kid with a bike - 6.5/10 I watched this film cos my gf likes French films and cos I heard it mentioned as an also ran in a list of 2012's best films, seemingly backed up by reviews elsewhere to some extent. As such I was disappointed by it. Nothing particularly wrong with it and I was happy enough to watch it through, but it just didn't live up to its billing for me. The film never seems to move out of second gear and is fairly uneventful. I saw the dvd - if I'd have paid cinema prices to watch I'd have been pissed cos there's nothing cinematic about it in my view, more like made-for-tv.
Django Unchained: 9.5/10 So brilliant. The casting and acting is superb, the cinematography is classic Tarantino (ie. EPIC) and the script just excellent. Go watch. (Thanks to the snow, there were only about 10 other people in the entire cinema, WIN!)
Dexter Season 6 and 7 *w^nk*/10 OK...this is getting retarded now. I should have stopped watching this 2 seasons ago. Death Race 3: Inferno 3/10 Absolutely lacklustre in almost every way. Fight scenes were nothing if not badly choreographed. Acting was average at best (even for this type of film), and the storyline was a setup for ANOTHER one, should the producers so wish). The Hobbit - An unexpected Journey IDK/10 Technically, the film was solid. Good, even. Obvious scaling issues (like in the LOTR films, then), and some wonky CG at times, but rock solid. The acting was good as well. And yet, this film annoyed the crap out of me. It's slower than molasses on Velcro and riddled with sub-plots that don't lead anywhere (and thus seem like pure filler). It's a bit like watching the first LOTR again, but minus the discovery of the universe (since we already know it).
I agree Tom Hardy is very good in Lawless, but I found Lebeouf's character was all too often grating. And the ending really could have been better, I fully appreciate the point the director/s were trying to get across but it was still slightly lacklustre. It was a violent movie (which is fine) but the violence seemed to serve little purpose... 7/10
Django Unchained 9.5/10 Christopher Waltz is bloody excellent in this film. For that matter, so is DiCaprio. And SLJ. An excellent film that (while long, hence the half-point missing from a perfect score) treads the line of being too dramatic and too ridiculous very well, carries tension and just feels pretty much perfect. There's no ONE thing that makes this film brilliant. It's all of it gelling together incredibly. I will have to see how it ages, but there's a solid chance that this will become my favourite film ever, replacing Pulp Fiction. Even enjoyable to non-Tarantino-nuts.
Django Unchained - 9.5/10 - Pretty much +1 to Bent and EvilMerc's ideas, absolutely excellent viewing, although I didn't think it was too long. Waltz really makes it, as with Inglorious Basterds, I don't think it would've worked very well without someone as charismatic as him.
Bronson 7/10 Very strange movie, and frankly there's a little too much of Tom Hardy's willy in it for me. He's an awesome actor though - very versatile - and his depiction of insanity is tangible and totally believable.
