The soundtrack is by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, you should get a hold of White Lunar, it includes most of the tracks from Jesse James, The Proposition and some others. Great film, great soundtrack!
Seven Psychopaths - 9/10 Quality film, well directed with a unique story. Much like In Bruges - it doesn't disappoint. Piranha 3DD - 6/10 Brainless teen-gore-psuedo-porn entertainment. Take it for what it is and it's watchable and funny in places. Hasslehoff is involved in most of the grin-inducing scenes.
Prometheus 5(10) Bit of a let down really. Simply too predictable and too silly behaviour of the crew.
Heheh... On the radio this morning they reviewed a couple of movies coming into the cinema's, including the new Statham movie, and introduced it like this: "for those of you that don't know him, Statham is the new Stallone"
Flight - 8(10) Very good, don't be fooled into thinking its about a plane crash, thats simply the catalyst for the events that take place in the film. I really didn't know how it would end but it was a satifactory conclusion.
Watched pulp fiction again a few weeks back - 8.5/10 Lots of great quality 1 liners in the movie, and I just generally liked most of the characters and felt the actors fit the roles very well.
TPB AFK - Difficult to score, but well worth a watch to see what these guys have gone through. Of course you have to pirate it to watch it
Zero Dark Thirty - 8.5/10 This film is a bit like Erin Brockovich - i.e. about a woman who goes on a crusade to get a certain result, but obviously the intended result is somewhat different. The second half of the film is really good, I got really immersed in the Pakistan setting and the climatic scenes shot in darkness are pretty cool. First half of the film wasn't engaging enough though - too many references to (insert unpronouncable doube-barrelled al-quaeda operative name of choice here) that I didn't care about and just a bit too much 'realistic' dialogue where the characters are speaking about specialist stuff but too fast for you to really compute what they're saying. Good characters though, and Jennifer Ehle was in it which gets it an extra 0.5 American Beauty - 9.1/10 Never gotten round to seeing this before, despite meaning too, so picked the DVD up for £3 in Sainos when I saw it. Really glad I did, the subject matter is right up my street, and if I hadn't found Kevin Spacey's character just a little bit annoying (in spite of how much I was supporting him) this would have got 9.5. If you're male and not a fan of the way (some) women seem to take life and squeeze all the sweetness out of it in some misguided attempt to attain status you gotta see this film.
Pulp Fiction is one of my all time favourite movies. One liners, the cinematography. Characters and the acting. The Marselus Wallace scene with the rednecks. ".......pair of plyers and a blow torch" I have seen the film a few hundred times now.
Its a okay film, though the month+ wait while its already been out at the cinema in the states etc is enoying.
Vertigo 6/10: I'm probably 50 years too late to enjoy it, but having been to SF I loved the nods to all the local places AND I've stayed in Vertigo hotel (it's very nice, would recommend), although not room 401. But this is probably the most I got out of the story. I'm not sure if it was meant to be a film of passion or horror or what. Things just sort of happened. The creepiest bit is Spoiler when she goes up to her rented room, he follows and the woman on the front desk denies she ever was there. Then he questions his sanity. Then later on Marge just doesn't bother appearing anymore. I'm not sure the point of her character at all. 13 Assassins 7/10: Started very well with the setup and playing people to get them into the right position, then when they actually came to fight it all went OTT and silly on the honorific. To the expense of the expressed intelligence they've built up throughout the whole movie. Spoiler "Oh there's ~170 of them, let's still jump down and try to kill them by hand" rather than everyone just aim for the Lord with arrows and explosives. And I've seen the whole let him stab me so I can stab you thing too often now.
Mulan II 5/10 Crap. Mulan was already a bit of a sub-par from Disney... they should really stay away from Sequels. Zero Dark Thirty 9/10 Properly gripping, and properly good. Quite long and long-winded though. Eddie the sleepwalking cannibal 6/10 a bit meh... Mimesis Night of the living dead 6.5/10 Entertaining enough, with a fun, slightly twisted concept. Violence, drama, and ultimately cheap.
Rock of Ages 7/10 I thought it was a music-movie, not a musical movie, so I was a bit miffed at start. The story is accordingly ultraflat, and the main actors are...well, mediocre at best. (was this really the best male for the part? really? noone left in Hollywood?) The highlight, no it isn't the music, as what they call "Rock" is "soft rock" at best, no, it's the cecondary characters, which are fantastic. Also, it's simply a a lot of fun to watch once you pass the slow start. Loved the alec baldwinn dialogue, and thought tom cruise did very well. (whoever choreographed katherine zeta jones should be banned for life though) The Expendables 2 6/6 (18+ version) The star cast heaves it just a tad over mediocre, and there's some nice tongue-in-cheek references, but that's really all there is The third H&G movie this year Not to be mistaken with Hansel and Gretel, the Horrormovie that was also just released, or Hansel and Gretel:warriors of Witchcraft Where do you dig out these movies, Namibia must be a boring place
2.2 Million people on a surface area (IIRC) 2.5 times the size of Germany. ~400.000-600.000 people in Windhoek. ~52% unemployment rate. I guess that there's not much else to do. There's a reason why Namibia's one of the most "alcohol plagued" nations in the world. the options are: 1. Stay at home and watch movies. 2. Braai with your friends (BBW-ish event) 3. Go out with your friends to a bar (clubs are for kids here...average age there is "willing to shag anyone with a driving license") 4. play games (not much of an option if the other half doesn't play games) 5. work I do 1), 2) and 5... a LOT.
That's about what I figured, well at least you get to surprise us with unknown movies. I'm too old for 3. and it's too cold for 2. here
